An ironic thing happened today. On my way home from looking at turbo diesel motors, my turbo diesel appears to have had a catastrophic failure

Left us stranded on the side of the road. We just finished towing it home....
There was this crunch noise and then the engine suddenly stopped. Right away I put the clutch in so I can coast to a pull out and I'm thinking "timing belt snapped".
While waiting for my wife to pick us up I whipped the valve cover off and checked all my timing marks. I brought all my tools in case I found a diesel motor I wanted.
All the marks lined up so nothing slipped or jumped. Engine turned over fine by wrench on the crank pully. So then I'm thinking something in the pump must have let go. I just put it in yesterday after my other pump sprung a leak. see

But as soon as I put load on it it stalls. Tons of black smoke. Feels like a timing issue to me but I can't be sure untill I borrow the timing tools again or the set I ordered finally arrives.....
