Thinking about bringing some 1.6TD from Canada to the US
« on: August 02, 2007, 10:27:29 am »
I posted this elsewhere, but thought I might get a better Canadian connection here.  If you've responded elsewhere, I'll let you know when I go.

I'm considering a trip to London, ON Canada in the next few weeks to pick up a few engines, and to see a friend. He's pretty car savvy, and races a '68 Camaro... not exactly a VW, though. I'm going to drive my F350. So far I think I'm going to need one for my '82rabbit, on for my uncle's '84 golf, and one for my dad's '82 caddy. That'd be 3 engines so far.

So, do any VW diesel savvy people in Canada want to help me source a few 1.6td's or 1.9 td's (please?) and does anybody in the US want to chip in on diesel for me to bring them an engine back? I live in Atlanta, GA, so you'd have to pick it up from me, or I could meet you on the way home.  I will be traveling on I-75.

These would obviously be salvage engines, and I'm not selling them.  You deal with the yard (in or near London, ON) I'll bring your engine back when I come. Therefore, I could provide no warranty.

Does this sound worthwhile to anyone?

So far, I've only found a single 1.6TD engine, and the inexpensive 1.9TD's that I found are gone.  The going rate seems to be in the $800 range for a complete engine.  Do any of you fine people in the far north want to help out us "deprived" southerners with some leads on decent turbo diesels?  Finding a source of engines is my biggest obstacle.  I'd like to find 3 or 4 of them in one place.

Thanks,
Don.

Don't waste your time with a 1.6, go right for the AAZ (1.9). You'll be glad you did.

Ahh, for the additional $800, I'll mod the 1.6TD to be pretty awesome.  I've found 1.6's from $550 to $750 and 1.9TD's are around $1300.  If you know of  inexpensive 1.9TD's, I'll gladly come see you.  :D

i bought a TDI longblock for $1200.  missing all accessories except water pump.  roughly 100'000km on it.  no turbo, and no injection pump.   bought an injection pump for roughly $400. a good used turbo (K03 style) would run around $200-250.  so $1800-1900 later you have a decent TDI.

i've opted to install total seal rings, and have everything cleaned out though, so the price will be running into the $2200 range.

I'm still interested.  I've taken my block to the shop.  But if I could pick up a runner for less than a grand I'm interested.

Definitely interested in a 1.9td... I'm in dayton, which 75 goes straight through. Let me know how much $$ you would need and who to contact about the salvage engines..

thanks
