R&R combustion prechambers
« on: July 15, 2007, 10:05:27 pm »
Has anyone replaced combustion prechambers?  My 1.6TD has 2 or 3 cracks in in each one.  I don't have replacements yet, but the look like they pull straight out.  Anyone have a photo of a tool to do this?

Bentley manual, at least the Quantum and Dasher manuals, show them being tapped out with a drift pin and a rubber-type mallet, pin inserted through the injector hole.

I would suggest not slamming it hard.

I've also heard of machine shops welding a rod to the chamber (from the underside) and using a slide hammer.  I would imagine installing the new ones would be as simple as pressing them back in but I have no idea.

I used a flathead screwdriver through the injector hole and lightly hammered them out. Some come out easy while others are really stuck.

I've just been looking at some photos on this forum, and I see other heads with cracked prechambers like mine.   Are they replaced at rebuilds if they're cracked? Do they get blown to bits and fall into the cylinders?

This is the worst of the four

You can get them here:

http://www.emm-motoren.de/eshop/08-vorkammern/volkswagen/index.html

They show all the oversizes too.

I tried to use the google translator but had no luck.  What do you mean by the oversizes?  Do you mean a oversize precup?  I thought they were all one size (For each engine of course). :?

The pre-combustion chambers come in oversizes because when the engine rebuilders overhaul a cylinder head it often happens that the pre-chambers are loose in there, so they remachine the bore of the chamber.
You see this too on original exchange heads from VW, so make sure that you measure your old ones before you buy new ones.

I have not seen any standard sizes here, so measure!

Is says in German that they come as a set, the type that VW uses is: A  and then the bore diameter, height and the opening size of the channel that goes to the combustion chamber.

I have measured some of mine that I had laying around and there are quite a few different sizes. On one set, the diameter D actually tapers from 27.17mm down to 26.57mm. It looks like it was pressed into place and deformed.

I have not ordered anything from this company yet but I would like to. If you do, let me know  how it worked out.

I looked at that german site.  My prechambers are 30.5mm so I guess that i would need this one:

http://www.emm-motoren.de/eshop/08-vorkammern/volkswagen/satz-vorkammern-in-510-uebermass-masse-3050.html

There's a VW place in Michigan called PartsPlace that lists a prechamber for "All diesels '77-92 and 1.9 diesels '93-99" for $20.
Unfortunately when I talked to them they said they don't ship to Canada.  Maybe I'll try again.

Did anyone look at my picture a few posts up?  I can't seem to get it to display on the page, only the link.  :(

How bad are those cracks?

Why won't the image post???

So do you need to pull your lower insert and measure it before you order new ones?    I am guessing that I just need the lower half of the insert.  Are you guys talking about removing the tophalf that is up in the head ?

Yes, that looks right, now if your head has been resurfaced before, the new pre-chamber will stick out a bit, as 4.30mm is the size it comes in.
You probably have to have the head resurfaced again to get it flat.

Looking at your picture, I think that I would replace that set.

Thanks Herman, I'll try that PartsPlace again tomorrow.   Maybe I'll have to get one of My Detroit friends to carry it across to one of me Windsor friends.

Any other known North American sources?

You're welcome, I have not found any here in North America, but I have been trying to contact two in Poland, one has a listing that shows all diesel applications but the Email link doesn't work, the other makes custom pre-combustion chambers, (I was thinking about special ones so that you can use a 1.9 cyl head on a 1.6, without the cold start problems) but he never Emails back. They probably don't speak English.
I have tried a translation with Babelfish but I have no idea if it is even close to what I want to ask.
Maybe some one on this forum has a Polish background.
Anyhow, here are the links:

http://www.moto-szlif.pl/wirowe_de.htm

Well, I cant't find that second link right now, I will get back when I do.
