need help! pumping exhaust out intake
« on: January 30, 2005, 07:03:44 pm »
I just rebuilt my 81 1.6 new pistons,bearings,rebuilt head.

Started the engine today it ran ok little rought. It ran about 1 or 2 minutes then all a suden it started making a sound like an exhaust leak but it was coming out the intake even smoke out the intake. Its a tick tick tick noise.

I checked the timing belt every thing is still in time. When i put the new head gasket in the specs where on the botom side of the #3 gasket.

Do you think i bent an intake valve?

Please help with ideas!

If it's exhaust coming out the intake, then it seems that one or more intake valves must be open or leaking on the exhaust stoke.  You say the timing is correct, but that's all I can think of unless the valves are leaking badly.  Have you done a compression/leak down test?

I did a compression test today and had 0 on # 2 cylinder. I pulled the head back off and everything looked ok no dings on the piston so i pored some water on the valve area and it ran right out the intake port. The intake valve must be bent. I bought the rebuilt head from Aluminium Head in portland  it looks to have  new valves mabie they dont check them first.

With no markes on the valve or piston I dont know what could have bent the valve.

The valve lash on that intake valve was .001 do you think that could have caused it?
