I was in looking for oil to do an oil change with on my Jetta. The previous owner said he used 15w40 plus Lucas oil stabilizer! Damn that oil must be thiiiick. I went to Canadian Tire for the oil and I saw Mobil 1 was on sale. Of course I checked the back label and found the 5w50 has the VW 505.00, API SM/CF and the ACEA A3 rating. Anyone else here use/have used it? It was the cheapest synthetic oil with an A3 and 505.00 rating ($7.19 a quart sale price). I'm going to get a Carquest premium (made by Wix) for the oil filter.

all i ever use is 15 40, and sometimes lucas to, and i use 15 40 all winter, it gets down to like -25 C or colder at night here in the winter, and the old girl starts good(plugged in of course) if it has higher mileage i would use a heavier oil, specially in the summer, go for thinner in colder months

I run whatever the rotella T SB (synth) is in the winter so I can start when it's not plugged in. Summer I run 10W40 Rottela T

i'm running the 5w50 and have been in the winter as well.

i'd have to say that it is a pretty good oil. starts good when cold, and i notice very little oil burn when my wastegate is attached and i'm not driving it too hard.

all you need for your older IDI is the api CF rating (for soot control). so far so good for me, and it will be a year in october that i've been running it.

about the lucas oil stuff. it's really good. it will actually stick to metal parts even at shut down. on an older vehicle with looser tolerances this can greatly increase the lifespan of the motor.

I've been running Rotella-T 15W40 ever since I was born. Okay, maybe not. The motor in my car has 278,000 miles on it (one rebuild) and has run non synthetic oil its whole life. The only thing I would consider is running lighter weight in the winter, but since my truck enjoys heated storage in the winter, it's not a problem for me.

The Mobil 1 is in. Thank god for strap wrenches, there was no way the old FRAM oil filter was coming off without one, outside of spearing the damn thing with a screwdriver. Found out my lower rad support is almost non-existent lol. The front crossmember is pretty solid looking though. While idling it after the oil change I noticed a few tiny little bubbles in the fuel lines, one every few seconds. Time for a new fuel filter?

i would suspect either fuel filter or water separator (do some searches. burn_your_money had a good thread going with the crap he found in one of his cars' water separator...) i notice a power decrease when the engine is at operating temperature with the mobil 1 5w50... maybe it's my motor though? (heat soak?)

one thing that pisses me off is tight oil filters... some newbies think you need to reef on them??!!! then it's so hard to get them off!! plus there is a risk that you could actually crack the delicate oil cooler that sits directly above :shock: !!!!

i think it's something like 3/4 of a turn when it's finger tight. (i always use my hands, and i've NEVER had an oil leak from there!)

so far i have about 4000 km on the mobil 1 (i think... :roll: ) and it seems to be good stuff. i would really like to install my oil pres gauge just to be sure though...

can't wait to install my bypass filter... there really isn't anything like having fresh clean oil in the car.. it just seems to run better!

good luck with your car ps. you are not using a fram on there are you? they are crap... the bypass on them opens way too easily, allowing unfiltered oil to enter the engine :shock:

hi,
mobil1-oils (0W40 and 5W50) are the best fully synthetic oils you can get.
the additives are the most modern on market today, keeps motor clean and protects well under all conditions.

the old 15w40 is especially at winter temps like honey (just put a little of it in the freezer over night)

i am using 5W40 at all time..
