max RPM with IDI?
« on: July 01, 2007, 02:45:52 am »
How high RPMs can you get out of VW diesels? Is the 1.6 more high revving than 1.9? What about the 2.4 inline 6-cyl?

I'm having a discussion with a friend, what's the highest revving diesel you know?
It should still be driveable, not like a second before it blows up during blowby

I donīt have a tach, but I calculated that I revved my 1,6 ~5500@5th gear. At smaller gears, it revs higher and is very driveable.

Not bad to reach 5500 in fifth!
Is it possible to reach over 6k rpm?

Ps. Siisti Scirocco

I thought Jake was running up to 6000 RPM. I found this dyno run of his. it was from his Rabbit 1.6lTD autocrosser.

Look at the drop in power at 5250!!! Thats gross... I can just feel the engine screaming for bloody mercy....

I don't have a tach wither. But I have revved my (soon to be old) 4S transmission to 40km/h n 1st. Which is approx. 5k rpm. Thanks to http://scirocco.org/gears/ for the conversion!

it's really not beneficial to rev like that if there's no power.

and power is going to suck up there simply because of how a diesel works.

the fuel needs time to ignite, that's why we have such long strokes and small bores, because a long stroke allows for more time near TDC through the arc, allowing the engine to ignite more of its fuel vs, say, a gasser with a short stroke and big bore, they hit TDC and just bounce away from it quick (rod length dependant)

and at such high rpms with such a long stroke, we run into piston velocity problems, they just can't take the speed.

That's what I thought, no way they can rev up to 7000 like my friend said his Golf did
Actually he said that he hadn't calibrated his tach so that explains it.
The torque at low- and mid rpm is what diesels are all about...

The engine configuration is a liquid cooled, normally aspirated, 584cc (36 cu in) double overhead cam single with four valves per cylinder. Diesel fuel supply is through a special Fuel Injection unit and single injector developed specifically for the task and the Kawasaki-based combat bike produces a respectable 28 bhp at 5500 rpm with meaty flat power delivery from 1500 and 7000 rpm.

Unlike its gas-guzzling counterpart, the engine has multi-fuel compatibility and can use commercial diesel (inc low sulfer fuel), NATO Military Spec Diesel Fuel, Bio-Diesel (B20 or B100), Aviation Kerosene including JP4, JP5, JP8, and AVTR and plain old Kerosene.

Not a VW, but revs to 7000

Also not a VW, but I know of a few IDI Mercedes diesels modified to run 5700-6000rpm at full power.

The engine itself will take 6000 to 6500 rpm but the injection pump's camplate won't keep up and start to skip above 5500.

I've revved many 1.6's over 6 grand, need a lot more dynamic advance to make power that high though.

Heres a pictures from Malones old Jetta ,on its way to 6k.

A couple of the hardcore vw diesel guys down here claim 7200rpm calculated by a g-tech or whatever. I found it hard to believe, untill I got behind one of them on the highway (cough, sniff, cough), and found out my vr6 would hit 170kms in 3rd gear, trying to catch him. These guys have been toying with these ve pumps for a while...  Next time I see one of 'em, I'll suggest taking a pic of there tach wound right out :)

Dang 7200!? I don't think I have ever been over 6700, and that was really pushing it, I'd love to rev to 7200, especially if I was still making power at 6600rpm. Any of those guys on this board?
