smoke screw questions
« on: June 07, 2007, 09:45:38 am »
What physically does the smoke screw do in the injection pump?  I'm guessing it adjusts the starting position of the tapered valve. I undersand the star wheel adjusts diaphragm spring tension.  If I want less smoke when I spool up the turbo,  which way do I turn the screw and by how much? What is a typical amount of adjustment?   T hank you.

Hi Larry,

this was provided by Trev0rbr,

ok so here is the star wheel, the spring sits in it and it adjusts the tension on the spring, turning it to the left raises star wheel and the springs seat, this increases tension, turning it to the right lowers the star wheel and decreases tension, which increases fuel, as you can see i put marks on this as well so that it is much easier to see how many times i turned it

i really useful link, a good read.

i just got back from andy2's place.  he just hooked me up with some insanely cool mods!!! hooked up my solid state fuel pump (there was a small leak when checking to see how much fuel was being pumped...  )

a little bit of tuning later (reduced fueling) 20 psi boost approx.  absolutely no smoke out of my tailpipe! i am now a happy man!  i hope to see some fuel mileage increases too!

i would have to say that andy2 is also a pimp! he works wonders with the starwheel adjustments!  with the right adjustment and increased boost, you can pretty much eliminate off boost smoke, and increase on boost fueling.

So how much do you need to turn the starwheel bolt to see a change? Like a quarter of a turn or more like several full turns?

it all depends on your settings, a guy ever told me when the LDA go down to deep the pin toyour LDA can break. (i think this only can happen when you remove the plactic ring)

i turned my about 80degrees and it was realy better.
if you do starwheel adjustments just take a paper and count the clicks you make, so you can always go back to stock settings

i mark mine with marker and just look at how many turns i do.  i think thats alot easier than counting clicks.
