AC almost stalls motor (AAZ)
« on: May 17, 2007, 07:48:44 am »
When its hot out (25C+) i notice my car idles significantly lower than when its cooler, roughly 700rpm.  Since its 25C outside my AC is on every now and then, but the issue is when I turn it on my RPM's drop down to 600.  Its not really a big problem but if I'm driving and I push in the clutch the revs drop down really low and it sound like i'm going to stall out?  Normally my car revs closer to 850 and bumps up to 1000 when the AC is on.  I'm leaning towards an AC problem but if anyone here has had the same issue I'd like to hear about it.  Thanks

If you have played with the pump settings (main fuel adjuster, idle settings etc.) you may have too little pressure on the idle governor spring. This will make the idle unstable, higher when cold, lower when hot and make the idle speed very sensitive to changes in load. It also makes the car very easy to stall and difficult to launch.

To fix it you need to warm the engine up completely, back out the idle screw as far as possible or until the engine speed drops below 800rpm, reduce the residual screw until the idle hits 800rpm, then bring the idle speed up to your desired speed using the idle speed screw. This adjustment insures that the sensitive idle spring (and not the main governor capsule) is taking care of the governing duties at idle speed.

i don't suppose theres a picture somewhere showing where these screws are located is there? My fuel pump was recently sent to Giles for a workover so i wouldn't really know where to start looking.
