Author Topic: Well, my waterpump finally went (Read 6503 times)

leaking out the square hole in the side of the pump, got all the receipts back to the original owner of the car, i've recently rolled over 300,000km, it was still on the original water pump. Buddies gonna help me install it on monday. Sucks when parts break on saturday and you can't get them anywhere.

any tips guys?

you replacing the whole thing or just the pump impellar part???

if just the pump impellar then make sure you dont gall the soft aluminum sealing surface! sometimes the gasket material can get pretty crusty, and i'm sure after 300'000 it won't be easy to clean off! i think using a plastic putty knife or something like that should do it.

I'd remove the whole WP assembly from the engine and then replace the guts in it. Thise bolts along the side that hopld it together will break very easily. Soak them, heat them and get a good grip in them. You may want to buy a whole new housing and save yourself the trouble.

BlacktieGTD just replaced his pump and documented it in his thread, I think it's in the general section. He said NAPA has teh cheapest pumps. I know his is a rabbit but its all put together the same, or close enough

i'm not looking for the cheapest pump, i'm looking for a the most reliable, this is one job i don't want to do again any time soon, plus having a/c makes it even more fun.

If you're replacing the entire water pump, instead of snapping off all the wretched, siezed 10mm bolts, splitting the water pump. Go get some curved spanners so as to unbolt the alternator pig iron without disturbing the injection pump. Is impossible elsewise.

Normaly is leaking from the shaft.

do i need to remove the injector pump when this is done? how much of a chance is there that i'll mess this up

I always remove the entire pump and I never had had to remove the pump. If you were doing your t-belt at the same time I'd replace the pump. You will have to fight with the top two bolts on the mount (the ones barried behind the IP). Use 1/4 drive and a swivel and you should be able to get them alright.

changed it, didnt' need any s wrench, didn't need to remove any of hte injector pump bolts.

had to go in there again and reseat the thermostat housing.

car sounds different now, has almost a rasp to it, like a lifter tick, oil pressure etc is ok, dunno what's going on.

uh oh, new problem

pumps in, no leaks, it's good.

took her for a drive and the engine is much more "tractory". louder than before

seemed a bit down on power in the lower rpm, bun ran ok

drove it into work today, 25km, and near the end of the trip, it got MUCH louder and was hesitating, way down on power, sounds like an aircooled beetle on acceleration, or lack there of.

any idea guys? this car has 305,000km, injectors were done not too long ago, and the injector pump has never been done.

running b5 in it. is it time to send my pump to giles?

my mechanic suggested disconnecting each injector at idle to see if the sound gets any different, gonna try that later on today

maybe there's an airlock impeding coolant flow??? try to bleed that out asap!
