Hey guys, sorry for the ignorance, but I have a question about getting my rabbit started after replacing the fuel injectors and the glow plugs. I dont know much about fixing this car, but the haynes repair manual made it look real easy to fix. I originally had a broken glow plug in cylinder #1 which i managed to blow out the bits and pieces out of the cylinder with a compressor. After refitting the fuel injectors in and glow plugs I put everything back and tried to start it. It wouldnt kick over... i realized that Cylinder 1's fuel injector was leaking around the edges, so i took it out and found some glow plug remains in the threads on the screw. after cleaning them out i replaced it, and tried to start it again. Now i have fuel leaking from the little hoses that connect the leak off outlets on the fuel injector. Also it sounds like its having a harder time trying to crank the engine each time i try to start it. Was there anything else I was suppose to do to get the car started again? It was semi-running before i took it apart. (I was driving on a bad glow plug for a bit) any help would be appreciated. Everythings stock to my knowledge on the 79 rabbit. Thanks guys!

Did you bleed the injection lines? The lines have to be bled or else air will go in the lines and the injector pump can't open the injectors.
To bleed the injector lines, you have to losen the nuts that connect to the injectors. Then, crank motor over a few times until you see the fuel start to seap out of the cracks. Tighten the nuts back tight again and see if it starts. Hope you luck

Hmm... i guess i could try it, but when i was reading the haynes repair manual it says i didnt need to bleed the lines..... and my fuel pump doesnt have one of those primers on it. It just has the fuel filter with the lines... Im assuming the leaking fuel lins are just old age in the hoses..... just replace them right?

the return hoses will only seal good once. you can cut off the end of it if the hose is long enough.

stupid haynes... yes it doesnt need to be primed if its JUST the injectors... but you should crack the lines to purge any air from the system. air in the system just makes it harder to fire, and puts more stress on your starter!

Would taking off the little black cap at the end of Cylinder #4 be enough to let all the air out? I have a black endcover/thing on the last fuel line barb with what looks like a screw plugged in it stopping fuel from going anywhere else. Just pop that guy off start the car until fuel comes out of the injector and plug it back up should be good enough...?

No it wont be good enough.

Follow the advice given above and crack the lines where they attach to each injector.

Remove the Fuel Return line from the top of the Pump, push on a clear Plastic Hose and suck on it until you see Fuel, replace return line and start the engine, leave the Injector Lines alone. Don't loosen on the Injectors, too messy.

i use a primer bulb, like the ones that used to come on outboard motor gas cans.

I leave the injector line connected. I don't like the fuel getting on the coolant hozes between the water pump and the oil cooler. They're a bi double t ch to change

I've had success "sucking" on the pump outlet, but one ECO Jetta I did just wouldn't go. Even with alot of fuel sucked out of the pump, still no go. I had success by pushing the fuel through the filter and into the pump. Fired right up after that.

There is somthimg fishy about the newer IDI filters with the hoze barbs instead of the spin on jobs for the A1. Never had a problem with the spin on types. Those hoze barb filters have always been a pain.

my coolant hose for the oil cooler was dripped on by the leaky pump for a good 2-3 months before i noticed the leak... no problems yet! :roll: :shock:

did you replace the heatsheilds for the injectors? If not you'll have compromised compression which could result in a no-start.

I personally crack the injector lines at the injector and have a friend crank until I see fuel then I tighten it down. I can't say I've had a problem with the coolant hoses. Don't let the diesel pour out all over the place.

For priming the pump I remove the OUT bolt and pour ATF into the pump. Never had a problem doing it that way, and I don't need to huff on diesel fumes.

How did the #1 glow plug explode? You might have an entierly fubared cylinder

Actually yea i replaced the heat shields and put new glow plugs in it.... As for the broken glow plug.... I have no idea what happened, i think i may have bought it that way. it fired up when i bought it. When i got home, it was a diffirent story. Im wondering if i keep cranking the car, will it hurt anything else? My motor sounds like its trying a lot less harder than it was at first, the sound of the motor almost crawls and chugs. When i try to jump start it, it sounds like an even chug noise trying to start the engine, but its not as strong as when i first tried to start the motor. any ideas on making this easier on the motor to start?What do you mean pour ATF in the fuel pump? Whats ATF?[/quote]

automatic transmission fluid

It helps clean out the pump, injectors etc

Hi@all

When a glow plunk looks like biten off, in 99% of all cases the injection nozzle is guilty. It`s too old and doesn`t spraying anymore, but puts out a single hard ray, which kills the glow plug. But I never heard it would be necessary to refill the pressure lines before starting...If evrything works properly the engine must start. And if it does not, theres something wrong. In this case here the nozzles are suspect. Check and change them, I advice and take for new a set of nozzles with pre-injection. DN0 SD 297 or 273.
