Running on waste engine oil!
« on: March 20, 2007, 05:46:59 pm »
So just started my new job with crown lift trucks! They have two 500gal tanks of waste oil in the back of the shop. It is mainly a mixture of engine oil(clean burning LPG) and hydraulic fluid. We can call it WEO for short.

I have got plans drawn up for making a waste oil heater for my garage out of a fuel oil(diesel fuel) heater. These heaters have a pump that pressurizes the fuel oil and sprays it through a nozzle which is lit by a spark plug looking igniter. Then the fuel stays lit as the nozzle spays a fine mist. Anyhow so to convert it you simply install a inline heater to warm the filtered WEO to a temp where it will easily ignite.

My question why not do this with a WVO system? The coolant will heat the WEO to around 160F and then flip the switch.

Obviously you would want to make certain that any containments including water are filtered or allowed to drop out of the WEO. The diesel injection system would spray the WEO at a much higher press. than the fuel oil heater would, so i would think it would burn rather clean.

A co-worker says he use to take oil t a friend and he would run it in his diesel truck. I have not talked directly to this guy yet.

What do you guys think? Has anyone done this?

Also i have about 15 gallons of fuel. If it is filtered well could i run that in my car? Since i have no reason to run it in the heater anymore!

I think i will. Does anyone have a diagram of a WVO system. I'm refuse to pay $900-1500 on a system. I believe i need two three way valves. One for the return and one for the feed. Some sort of coil in the tank and the coolant run by the fuel line up to the filter. and maybe a heated filter. Where do you tap into to get circulating coolant all the time?

That's going to make for some pretty nasty emissions. Burning WEO in auto engines, or burning it at all really, is frowned upon because of the heavy metal compounds found in it, either from detergent and additive packages or from engine wear.

Same problems as with WVO, look out for with the WEO. Poor spray patterns, incomplete combustion, possible ring coking, etcetcetc...

Yeah i was afraid of that. There are some problems with the clean burn heaters coking up.

During the summer a co-worker is running his VW diesel on a mix of 2/3 engine oil/hydraulic oil mix and 1/3 diesel fuel.  This waste oil is not quite what you would be using as it would generally have a maximum of 20 hours running time on it.  The oil is a mix of an unknown ratio of 15W40 diesel engine oil and 10W hydraulic oil.  He said he hasn't had any problems with the engine after one summer of running on this.  I can understand the concern with contaminants in oil that has been used for a full life cycle.

I ran WEO in my 01 Dodge for along time. Up to 50% most of the time.
I ran it up to 80% a couple times but that wasnt  intentional just didnt have time to stop for fuel.
I ran it through a filter before I added it to my tank.
I would usually dump the oil in then top off the tank with fuel so it would mix well.

I also ran a FASS 150gph fuel pump with a return so it was usually mixed really well.

the only thing I noticed was a burning oil smell coming from the tail pipe at times, not really and blue smoke which I thought was a bit strange.

After about 15k miles I pulled the injectors to see how they looked, looked fine.

I have a 55gal drum in my shed and I have a transfer pump/ filter set up mounted to it. I dump the waste oil through a double paint strainer then when it's pumped out it goes through a HUGE spin on oil filter then into whatever container I choose.
I will from time to time dump a few gal of reg diesel into the drum to thin it a little also.

Well, blue smoke makes sense; when you're burning oil in a gasser, it makes the smoke that nasty blue-black color, so.

Also, I was burning it in a dodge Cummins as not a gasser I doubt you could run a mix of diesel and WEO in a gasser.
