Boost Gauge

Im both new to the forum and new to Diesels. I have a 1994 Golf with a stock AAZ 1.9TD engine. I am planning on experimenting with the engine modifications on this thread.

Before I do this I want to connect a turbo boost gauge. Would something like this
 work? If so what hoses/connectors would I need to also buy to be able to fit it?

If anyone has any other comments/suggestions or advice about fitting a turbo boost gauge or about the modifications I plan to undertake please could they reply to this thread. Please remember I am new to diesel engines of any sort so forgive me if I say anything stupid.

You can buy any boost guage you want....you dont need one that shows vacuum (since diesels dont have vacuum). I would pick something that goes from about 0-30PSI. Buy a guage with an installation kit.
Basically all you need is the guage, some vacuum line and a "T" fitting.
I think there are pictures on the site that show where to tap in and how to install one aswell!!!

No worries... no dumb questions !!

Your diesel will generally put out somewhere around 10 psi (at least until you get serious about modifications!), so on the gauge you've shown you will only use the first third of the dial... an inconvenience only.  Any pressure gauge capable of showing at least 10 psi will work... of course the ones specifically designed for automotive applicaions will have backlighting, standard 2" size etc.

On the top of your injection pump there's a tower-looking piece called the LDA... and there's a rubber or cloth-covered hose between the LDA and the intake manifold.  This hose tells the pump how much boost you are generating and therefore how much additional fuel to add... perfect place to tap in a boost gauge.

I cut that tube and then use a small plastic tee from a model airplane shop.  The output of the tee connects to  about 6 feet of nylon tubing that comes in the standard NAPA oil pressure gauge kit for about 5 bucks.  The nylon tubing goes to the boost gauge... in my case the oil pressure fittings that came in the NAPA kit fit the back of the boost gauge perfectly... thanks VDO.

In the thread you refer to the very first picture shows the LDA (it's the silver dome to the right of the switch with the numbers)... you can actually see a small length of black cloth-covered hose, then a white tee, and then some blue hose.

In terms of modifications there are lots and lots and lots... your best bet is to use the search functions of this forum and the ones at vwvortex and vwdieselparts.net... you'll find tons of info and will soon be in a postion to ask questions that are "smart" !

Nick that gauge wil be fine. If you found a carbeuretter vac/ fuel pump pressure gauge then you could also get a reading of a blocked air filter :idea:

hi, im adding an intercooler to my aaz engine this weekend, should give me some more power. had my boost pressure upped to 1.2 bar and the turbo kicks in early, approx 1500rpm.
i've also added a boost gauge, fitting is really easy. will try an upload some pics soon.

Thats a nice looking car nogama3. Boost gauge pictures would be appreciated. Do you know what hp your car puts out??

dont know hp but standard td's are 75 bhp, mine is currently running at 95 bhp with another 10-15 with the addition of the intercooler.
