1.9 metal head gasket upgrade,
« on: January 02, 2007, 12:59:16 pm »
Hi all,

my first post of 07,  so happy new year to you all.

i have seached and read all the posts i can find relating to uprgading to a 1.9 metal head gasket. to a 1.6 lump.

i think i understand what needs to be done, but i wanted to double check what i'm reading. just drilling the block seems drastic, but if that's what it takes then so be it.

1/ the oil gallery below (see pic) cylinder 2 needs to be blocked off, there seems to be various means of doing this, from bungs, gasket paper to mastik.

2/ the block needs to be drilled with 8 extra holes to match the new gasket, as in the picture below?

3/ arp or raceware streeeeetch bolts recommended.

i have circled the holes in question.

is that all that is needed? or can you add anything.

I blocked the hole with 2mm rubber. I did not drill those 8 holes, why should?

Hillshy old chap,

I don't have permission or can't see the image at that link... maybe no-one can?

Is this the mythical (OK, real) metal gasket trick, didn't know that, thought it was just a replacement gasket.

Nope... can't see those pics, hillshy.   I've wondered about doing the metal HG on my 1.6 solid lifter engine.  Seems like a good upgrade that should allow more boost.

So... you just cut a disk and put it in the hole in the gasket?  What hardness / variety of rubber?   I have a tough time getting my head around using a piece of rubber or even a slice of another HG to plug that hole.  Doesn't seem like it would seal and if you get the size or thickness wrong, you'd be doing it again soon.   Maybe I'm just wimping out.

Amen.  I know Jake and others have done it, but I'd like to see the process.

Is this just for 1.6's or can the bolt sets and metal gasket be used on the 1.9TD (or is that a silly question)

The 1.9s come with the metal gasket so there is no need to upgrade, the bolts are an upgrade to either engine

Veeman, click on Audi80's post where it says "2mm rubber" and it will give you the picture you want.

What would happen if this hole wasn't plugged?

Ok, I just looked at pictures of the stock 1.6 HG I installed in my car. as seen here

and it looks like you (audi80) plugged a hole that comes on the original HGs

Thanks for that burn-y-m, so what is a non-metal gasket (a  composite gasket)?

hi all,

thanks for all the replys to my post, sorry about the pictures not working right, i'll get that sorted in the few days.

veeman, im totally the same i like to check and double check stuff, i agree - it just don't seem right blocking up an oil gallery with a rubber bung, hence the quesions.  :?

but those who have done this are all well clued up folk so i guess thats for enough for me.

audi80,

how do you do that with url imbedded thingy in "2mm rubber" in your post, nifty trick that

thanks for that picture, that answers my question, that's the 1 part i didnt understand, the oil gallery, i took prev posts to mean that it was being blocked off. which is why felt the need to ask.

metal gasket upgrade to solid lifters 1.6 engines,

1/ the 8 extra hole are not necessary but optional to assist in the cooling.air pocket and hot spots.
2/ make a bung as shown in the picture kindly provided by audi80.
3/ change the stretch bolts for arp or raceware types.

cool, i got that now.
once again thanks for all who posted.

cheers

hillshy.

is that a solid lifter HG??? audi80 has a solid lifter head.  us guys with hydraulic lifters don't need to block anything am i correct???????????

Metal gasket is bolt on to ´85 => engines which have hydraulic lifters. In older engines with mechenical lifters, you will have to block it. Otherwise coolant has a open hole outside.

I cut it from 2mm thick rubber gasket, I think it was from some gas cap gasket
