Which turbo is best for me?
« on: December 18, 2006, 08:34:47 pm »
I have a KKK and garrett off a 1.6 and a k14 and a k03 off a 1.9. I run my car in ECO mode (LDA disconencted) Apparently (according to Hagar) it will lower the soot in my oil, and extend the life of my engine and get better mileage. I'm wondering what turbo is going to provide me with the most boost most of the time. I do alot of highway driving and I usually shift around 2700 rpm, cruising rpm is kept between 2k and 3k

Eventually I am going to get a VNT, but thats a few years away I think

What would you recommend? or is it a trial and error thing?

K03 for sure.  you will have next to no smoke as it should spool right off the line.  should help to burn the soot :)

personally i'd rather just keep the power, and install an fs2500 bypass filter :)

I have no smoke as it is. Actually I noticed a bit last night for the first time since I changed my air filter. It's only been on there for a month, or 7k kms. I'll have to have a look at it.

K03 eh... what would be my best second choice?

With the mk3 turbos they each have their own exhaust manifold right?

If you can find a garret T2 from an early passat AAZ they are a good small turbo, similar to a K03 in performance. The T2 also fits the trapeziodal flange 1.6TD manifold.

The Garrett and K24 both have considerable lag and without boost enrichment might even have trouble reaching stock boost pressures of 9-10psi...
