hybrid turbo setups
« on: November 19, 2006, 07:17:11 am »
I have quite a few turbos laying around and I decided to go through them and rebuild what I have.   And some of the differences that I've noticed.

On the diesel side:
1.6td, t-3
volvo td t-3
1.9 kkk k03
audi kkk k-24
1.6td KKK k14

gas:
1.8t 20v KKK k03 150hp
1.8t 20v KKK k04 225hp
gas 8v turbo t-3 .42 a/r
audi 5000T k26

The volvo D24td turbo, although the a/r is the same as the vw units, the trims are larger.  The turbine and compressor wheels will not fit in the vw housings.  The wheels are much larger than the 1.6td units

The KKK K03 AAZ style 3-bolt, the gas KKK K03 has a much larger compressor wheel.

The gas t-3 turbo I have has the same a/r as the 1.6td, the turbine wheel is the same but it has larger compressor wheel.  It's actually a hair larger than the volvo td compressor wheel.

And the audi k26 has a much larger compressor wheel than the KKK K24.

Now, I was thinking of combining:

The KKK K03 diesel turbine with the audi K03 150hp gas compressor/housing.   It still should have the lighting fast spool up and a little more top end with the larger gas wheel.  Should be a nice turbo for a converted N/A 1.6 diesel or 1.6td, setup for max mileage

The 1.6td t-3, but swap in the compressor wheel/housing from the gas turbo t-3.  Again the compressor wheel is approx the same size as the volvo td.  A little slower spool up but more efficient under higher than stock boost levels.  May be a great turbo for 1.9 td's and tdi's or modded 1.6td's

The KKK k14, I'd like to get a k16 compressor side..the K24 nothing swaps over...I believe the audi k26 cold side should swap into a k24..that would make some serious boost with the right setup.

Wondering if anyone has already used any of these hybrids listed above and there findings.

I was wondering about K14 and K24 hybrid, and you say that it isn't doable....I thought that while T2/T3 hybrid is possible, K14/K24 would also be possible...
 :(
Excuse me on my bad English

the k14 and k24 have different shaft diameters..so I don't know how you could build a hybrid

I've made a hybrid k24/k14 (k24 turbine with k14 compressor).Definitely a waste of time, stick with the 1.6 T3 and it will work great up to 22-24 psi no problem.T3 over k24 any day.

I would imagine that setup would be counter productive, it think the k03 td turbine and gas k03 compressor would be great for an eco diesel

I'd love to see someone try a k24/k26 hybrid...especially on a tdi or 1.9td

Are any parts between the K14 and the 1.8T K03 interchangeable? I have a 1.8T K03 sat in the garage doing nothing, and the K14 is on my GTD.

Maybe K14 turbine and turbine housing on the K03 compressor, compressor housing and centre section?
