Pump Mods/Gov Mod?
« on: November 16, 2006, 02:28:53 pm »
So i did the Gov mod. I used a piece of 1/4" stainless tube to eliminate the intermediate spring and to preload the main spring 1/4". Now it idles fine crusies fine. But when i mat it the it doesn't pull as hard as say 85% throttle. I feel it is over fueling way to much cuz i'll get what looks like white smoke. I backed the full load fuel off but it just took away from the first 50% of the throttle then it was the same as before throught the rest of the travel.

The EGTs never went above 1100 but was around 700 just cruising at 45mph. I installed a SCed Corrado manifold with a modified dual downpipe. I put my probe in the port on the manifold that is in between the two ports. What are the usual temps to expect out of the egts?

I haven't had much road testing so next week when i do more i'll post more but if anyone has delt with the similar please let me know.

Yup its a non turbo. Whats the problem with doing it to a N/A?  I have a Pyro, and all its doing is continuing to add fuel until the higher rpms. If there is more to know please let me know. I redid it with a shorter piece and it seems to run good really strong in the low to mid rpm, combined with the corrado manifold and downpipe. I just need to work on the intake.

Hi all,

i'd also like to know why the Gov mod shouldn't be done on a N/A motor?

u shouldn't do the part load gov mod since it changes the fuel
delivery the wrong way for a NA engine.

but do the max rpm gov mod though

so, only a stronger preload for the main spring, and not shimming the intermediate spring?!?

That would make sense on the way the ole N/A is runnin. gonna switch it out this weekend. So the max rpm spring is the longer one?

OK... I'm a newb with an '85 Golf NA (with 1 leaking pump installed and several old "spares")
BUT: I have a seal kit  (local Bosh service center), the Bosch IP pdf (open... can't re-find the link), the "Governor Mod" and the "Governor Mod - Clarified" open and

I'm a little confused. The first one looks like a TD IP (I got no diaphragm on mine). Am I going for the second one?
Just the intermediate spring or just the shims on the big spring?

Is this the figure I need to fully grasp:

I don't want to race but I hate it when they show up in the rear view on long climbs.

If I do manage to up the power will methanol/water injection make any difference in an N/A?

what is the dif between a part load gov mod and a max rpm gov mod? or did I miss a simple thing? :?
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Anybody cleared this up yet?
Does giles mean that you should only pre-load the main spring and leave the intermediate in tact for a N/A diesel?

I tried this.

I have a NA caddy, I did both mods, it was okay, but as stated it didn't feel as quick when booted.

So, I undid one of the mods and it worked a teat.

Caddy now pulls harder all the way up the rev range.

Which mod did you undo? Shimming/replacing the intermediate spring, or shimming the main spring?

My pump is leaking and I think the O ring is probably shot, so I want to do this when I replace that but I need to be sure which mod to do before I pull things apart.

Cheers
