2000tdi bottom end rebuilt to use with a 1.6 head?
« on: August 28, 2006, 08:15:33 pm »
I've got access to a 1.9l 2003 ALH montor that has 113000km when a valve was dropped on cylinder 4.  Needless to say the ensuing catastrophic engine damage has resulted in a customer getting a replacement motor installed through our shop and me be the owner of the $5000 anchor.  I've pulled the head as it's pretty much junk.  Piston 4 is also useless, but the bore was luckily not damaged( you can still see the factory honing marks in the bores).  The crank still spins freely, although I suspect the no4 rod might be bent(I'll know tomorrow).

Being a VW only repair shop in Windsor Ontario, I've got access to quite a few engines.  We have a couple 1.6 NA and TD engines.  I'm wondering if either a 1.6/1.9 head and matching IP can be bolted on and used on the TDI bottom end.  If I replace the 4th piston and possibly the rod can the 1.6 head play nice with the tdi bottom end and actally work properly?

There's probably going to be a lot of problems using it.  I would say that you will probably need 1.9 crank + rods + pistons + 1.9 head.  All AAZ.  You could fit a 1.6 head on a 1.9... but its not going to allow the motor to breathe the way it was meant to.

Or... find a nice TDI head and get a TDI mech pump  :D

... Wonder how that valve broke inside the cylinder?  That has got to be some super bad luck, or VW's quality control isn't doing their job right.

The short answer here is no. No IDI head that I know of will work on there so that engine must stay with direct injection. So, either get another head, piston, and rod or use the engine for parts.

What about using the tdi block, 1.9 idi pistons/rods and an idi head?

An ALH engine has different passages between the head and the block. It's not like the AHU/1Z where they shared the same block between the IDI and the TDI with the main difference being the crank sensor.

Mk2Fanatic,

what kind of shape is the camshaft in? I am interested in the whole junk head for parts that I am lacking on my TDI head.

Let me know what you want for it if the cam is good.
Thanks
