Saab or Volvo intercooler?
« on: August 19, 2006, 07:36:58 am »
I have a Saab Blackstone IC and a Volvo IC and am trying to decide which one to use. Mounting space is not a concern. I hear the Saab IC is good and the hose connections would work better giving me a cleaner install with less hose length. The Volvo IC is bigger and will complement my radiator nicely but the way the hose fitting are I would need alot more plumbing and would not be as neat. Is there a big difference on how these IC's perform?

IC from a 240? If you plan to run more than 22 PSI or so it's a good idea to tie the end tanks on to prevent it from blowing up or leaking. Friends of mine have run 26 through them without issue though.

Volvo is what I figured, not sure what is off but it is huge. I guess if the Saab owners are swapping them that must mean something...

It's rather thin too, about an inch? with black plastic end tanks? If so it's from 240, I'm not sure if the 740 had the same one or not.

Both of those IC's don't flow that well (tube and fin design)as opposed to bar and plate, but I would pick the volvo one too as it should flow better than the sabb one.

I've owned a few volvos and I can say that 940/740 and 850 turbo intercoolers are huge. I never ran more than 15psi on those cars but I never had an intercooler problem.

just about any intercooler is better then NO intercooler.

The Saab ones came 2 ways. They were either ALL aluminum (early) or they were like the Volvo ones(later)...alum core with plastic crimped on ends. I personally have an early one. I was thinking of getting a semi IC and chopping it down to my specs and welding tanks on but its not like I have that much room anyway. So Ill just use my tiny Saab one and water spray it like the Subaru STis.
