Some basic questions
« on: May 07, 2006, 08:28:34 pm »
Hey everyone, I have a few questions for you. I have been reading a bit about diesel engines lately and am thinking I might like to build myself a 1.6TD, espescially with the prices of gas lately. I was surprised to read how much power you could get out of a diesel engine.

Anyways, i'm sure I can find a 1.6 diesel for pretty cheap to put into a MkII but how much would it cost to rebuild the engine (assuming it would need a rebuild)? And how much should I expect to spend to get a decent amount of power out of it? Say around 108hp, like the stock gas 1.8 8v I had in my MkII GTi, or maybe as much as 130? Also, does fuel economy significantly decrease when you are trying to squeeze this much power out of a diesel engine?

I know it's a lot of questions, but if you could help me out at all or point me towards some other resources or write-ups I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Daniel

You should start by posting your location. That does affect prices and availability.

Start poking around the threads some. Check out the FAQ/tips section first. Lots of good info there.

With a good, stock motor to start with, those power figures are easily attainable by addressing airflow in and exhuast out, cooling the charge air from the turbo and with fueling adjustments on the pump as addressed in several threads.

As far as economy, that's the beauty of the diesel engine. Some folks have 150+hp 1.6's and 200+hp 1.9's that'll get the same 40-50mpg's as a bone stocker  driven the same "sensible" way.

 But, with all that power and almost twice that in torque, it's gotta be hard to be sensible ALL the time!!

Like the old saying goes: "How fast(far) do you wanna go?.......How much do you have to spend?"

I think the best thing about modding the diesel VW is that most of the basic power mods are to exisitng equipment.  You don't need a pile of performance parts, you just start tweaking the pieces that are already there.  Definetely read the FAQ section and their is 2-3 posts in there about this to start.  That'll get you a better idea of where these engines will go.

Yes. That is seriously wicked.
"All" you need is an IC and a large pipe.

It's right in the "FAQ/Tech tips/Please read first" area of the english section on the main page.  It's kinda hard to miss.
