put in my boost gauge, think my waste gate is stuck

so now that i can monitor my boost, i ran my car down the road, and it spiked up to 12 pretty quickly, then right when it hits 12 it goes back to 8, my guess is that my waste gate is stuck closed and that when it hits 12 the blow off valve is doing its job and let some air out,  kind of curious what everyone else is thinking.  i'd like to replace the spring with something solid and then see what happens, cause if it keeps climbing to 20 or something i know theres a problem.

its probably the BOV.  Your car is a 1.6TD right?  It usually opens at around 11-12 psi to "protect" the engine.

yep, so is my waste gate stuck at all though.  regardless i'm gonna disable the bov the next time i get some free time.

Stock fueling with a disabled BOV and wastegate will only let boost climb to 13-14 psi I would't worry about that.If you've already upped fueling then boost could climb to 20 psi.Basically dont worry about a seized closed wastegate until boost climbs above 20 psi.

Watch out though if you don't have an intercooler. IDI heads cook real easy above 15 psi sustained boost :shock: ........ believe me I know!!  :shock: :oops: ..... my "Q" did go 115 up a mile long 4% hill :twisted: .......once!! :cry:

so you guys definetly feel it's stuck shut?  i was hoping i would actually have a working one, so i would one more thing to get my car tuned how i want it, oh well.  i do have an intercooler in the works though.

and i;ve heard diesel quantums run very very good, the on guy i know said his would go over 100,  i kind of wonder if there engine tranny set up is superior to the way the jetta/golf is in.


i'm also a little skeptical of my gauge though, before i had everything in place in the center console, i had my friend ride with me and he was holding the gauge and watching it, when it hits 12 you can hear a little hiss from the gauge.  but i dunno

I would check your hoses first, after they get warm from the engine they get soft and stretch so re-apply them after they get warm the first time.  Also keep in mind that the turbo will not always keep a sustained boost because it's not measuring speed or power.  It's measuring air pressure.  So when you hit the pedal, the RPM's start increasing so the turbo starts spooling, and the pressure to get the air going into the intake starts rising but once you get the engine, and the exhaust up to the speed, the engine is spinning faster and thus drawing more air out of the intake manifold and thus lowering the pressure again.  So just remember that when hammering it, the pressure will go up but then will probably come right back down once the engine starts using that air up.

ok, earlier today i plugged up my bov, not with the traditinal method, i just plugged the exit hole up all nice,  and it still did it.  so i think like said before, the air must be getting used up.  i dunno i'll have to make a movie and see if it's all normal.

the gauge makes some noise every time it goes down, but should my boost be going from 12 to 5, it's as soon as i hit 12 psi it goes back to 5-8, it doesn't matter what the motors doing, is something wrong?

Sounds like you havn't disabled the bov well enough.Just unthread the screw on top and drop somthing in there( then tighten the screw back down.I'm sure if you do a search on this topic that you will find detailed info on "disabling Bov".

Sounds like the guage, or the line to it, has a leak
