• Well. I finished tonight.. I finaly got the damd pulley off the inj pump.. went fast after that... Can't figure out how to get the A/C comp off.. don't really need it anyway. Well here are the pics.. It's obvious that #3 cly was the one burning coolant.. The globules you see are jelly like in texture. Not sure if the head can be saved.. every cly has a nice crack between the valves.. #3  is really messy looking. These pics are 800X600 and are 100Kb each.. so dial up beware, any comments are welcome.. BTW the car actually ran fine. It smoked a little at start up occationally missing for 30 sec or so. • The cracks between the valve seats are no cause for concern, they all do that. The crack from the #3 prechamber to the valve seat is what concerns me. It is definately the source of the coolant. A very good aluminum head specialist may be able to weld this. I've heard good things on this forum about these guys http://www.aluminumheads.com If they can't fix it I guess you'll need another head...

  I bet that head can be fixed.  I'd get a few machine shop opinions before I ruled out that it was toast.  Like QuickTD said, the cracks between the valves are no big deal, but I dont know if I've seen one from the prechamber to the valve seat before.  How many miles were on this thing?

• i've pulled a head off after only three days out of overhaul and found cracks between the valves.

• The car has 270,000 on it.. Not sure if it was ever rebuilt.. I think it was though. The car was in excellent shape for an 84, everything but the AC working. It appeared that the previous owner had the serviciing done at VW or other quality import shop. It had an oil filter on it that said" made in Germany"  I think Mann was the brand. Anyway.. so now I will be sending the car to the crusher soon. Still need to strip some various parts. If anybody need body parts or glass and lives local to Cincinnati Ohio you are welcome to anything.
  
  When my Metro eventually blows up, I will be looking for a Rabbit to slap the turbo on.

• If it's got a 5 speed transmission, keep it and sell it on vortex. Bolt-on on 4-speed foxes
  
  There's a good demand fot it (ratio of 1:1)
  
  Might be more trouble but makes a few extra $$$
  
  And if the scrapyard doesn't give you anywathing for it, annonce it on the vortex too. Lots of idots there but some good guys too.

• The Fox is mounted inline also instead of transverse? I thought only the quantum was like that...
  Not sure I will be able to pull the trans.. It is sitting in the back yard.. no place to do it safely. Also shipping a trans would be very expensive.. and there seems to be almost NO local VW people around to sell it to.. Like I said though if someone local wants the car or any parts.. I would sell the whole car for very very cheap. I would rather someone get use of it than it go to the crusher. But it can't stay here much longer.. since the tag is now expired and I will end up wth another ticket from the City of CensorNazi if it stays much longer.
