Turbo cool down?
« on: April 25, 2006, 11:28:32 am »
Anyone know if there is truth to the idea that you need to cool down the turbo before shutting the engine off?

My 1/2hr commute ends 30secs to 1 min. after the off ramp so I am going 120Km/hr to 0 in that time.
Any thoughts or ideas that may be  helpful at making this engine last to 600,000km
Thanks Kevin L

On older turbos, there is benefit in something like a turbo-timer as you'll cook your innards if you shutoff while hot. The folks on TDI club say that unless you're driving in precisely the manner (hills, towing, etc) that you're describing, you don't need a turbo timer.

Synthetic oils should provide better protection for your turbo (and longer life in general) than your conventional 15w40. There's also some discussion about the appropriate weight (I'm sure that'll kick up momentarily).

I'd say either driving around slowly for a few minutes or getting a turbo timer would be the options. What type of car/engine are you running?

Thanks
My previous jettas were N.A. and I am enjoying the extra H.P. of the turbo.
I think I will drive around the block or sit in the parking lot an listen to the radio for a few minuets in the morning before shutting down and going in to work . It  can't hurt.

on my dodge i wait till the exhaust cools to around 300degF or close to it and give the turbo time to be at its slowest rpm at idle so it does not spin a longer time than needed with out oil pressure. with no egt guage 2 min should be just fine from highway speeds.

run around with just a DP and you will hear how much your turbo is spinning coming off of highway or from carbon cleaning. My rule of thumb is, If I was in boost 2minutes before parking I let it cool off 2 minutes, if I was really on it like boosting before pulling in I let it cool off at least 3min or more, depending on when/if the fan kicks on.

That has been my guide for all my turbo cars and the turbo I put together 40k miles ago still has no shaft play and been boosting 20psi or so on my gasser when it was designed for optimum of about 14psi on my application so I am overspinning it alittle bit.

My view point, 2min of my life (I waste more on TV and internet if I wanted it back) or a couple hundred $$ and time to replace a shot turbo.

also on our cars the turbos are only oil, if they were watercooled it would help but with proper cool down time it is not needed.
