stock TD turbo parts on my n/a for fuel economy?
« on: April 16, 2006, 10:51:29 pm »
was thinkin about installing all the stock TD parts + passenger performance 2.5" mkI downpipe on my 1.6 n/a jetta...

my logic...
get the valves adjusted (shimmed)
pump retimed with new timing belt (rebuit a few k miles ago)
crank up the fuel quantity screw a little
install factory turbo parts
go off wastegate pressure (which is what 7, 8, 9psi?)

watch EGT gauge

enjoy more fuel economy and power :)

until i can find a hydraulic TD block and head to swap over :) which in california is hard :(

I am ecstatic I found a complete builder 1.6td for a good deal.  I was holding out for a 1.9, but beggars can't be choosers, and I just can't justify the prices that decent 1.9s go for.

1.9's are pretty peppy, but I like the 1.6 better for fuel economy.  Unless you will be working the motor (hauling etc.) then its useless going to a 1.9 just for the power.

the 1.6 engine can be made as fast and even faster than a 1.9 due to less rotating mass, and a wide variety of mods/parts available.  Just do some searches on it.

Now back to adding the turbo to the n/a motor.  Increasing the exhaust diameter is an extremely good idea!  Install a small quick spooling turbo as well since you dont want to cook your motor.  Do a search on the n/a VNT-15 that jake converted.

I also spoke with a gentleman this morning installing a 1.6NA with a turbo into a Suzuki Sammi, and will be using one of our Boost Cooler water-methanol injection kits to help keep chamber and Exhaust Gass temps way down.  Water and water/meth injection are a good way to help with that.

Please do not install a small turbo, your exhaust backpressure will go through the roof. Use a turbo from the 1.6 td's the t3 or the k24, all the 1.9 turbos are crap throw them away. But yes turbo your na, no you definately don't need an IC, just keep you egt levels in check and youw ill be fine. The downpipe helps reduce the exhaust backpressure=quicker spool up and it'l help keep those egt's down which you will really want for your na block.
