Turbo vs. non-turbo downpipe interchangeabiltiy question
« on: April 16, 2006, 03:50:58 pm »
Are the turbo and non-turbo toilet bowl downpipes interchangeable.  I have a 91 n/a diesel that I turboed and I'm hoping the N/A downpipe will fit the turbo clip-on elbow directly off the turbo.

I put both manifolds on a bench and the outlets look to be in a slightly different position in regards to each other.  I'm hoping to get by with the n/a downpipe just to get the car up and running.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Doesn't look like it. But I'll have the definitive answer for you tonight. Right now, the TD downpipe is about 6" too far back into the bay and doesn't line up at all.

I am going to be dealing with this issues shortly I planned to buy whatever size flex (non inspection passing in PA) exhaust pipe the local parts place sold would fit over the end of the DP and clamp it on till I get my new DP and a 2.5" exhaust system installed, then just reduce/hack it to fit the stock setup for a week or 2

Also, I'm pretty sure the n/a exhaust is much smaller diameter (1 3/4" ?). I would simply leave it at the downpipe until a freeflowing exhaust could be installed, or forever if you can deal with the underhood soot...

I'm not so sure on that. Again, I'll have a picture tonight.

On my caddy, the turbo DP had a wiggle to the side the stock peice doesn't.  the clamps are the same.

Front pipes are different between the TD and N\A motors.

You may be able to make it work for now, until you get the right pipe.

Downpipe is shorter in overall length on TD models than NA models. The pipes are also larger than the NA, but can be made to fit the NA toilet bowl (with a little wiggle) if you get an exhaust pipe extension that adds about 4-5" to the length of the overall system.

me and my dad took my mk1 n/a pipe and cut it and turned it towards the drivers side, and then cut it shorter, did a little finish on the flange and the 2 pieces of pipe to get the angles right and then welded it all together, but that's a mk1 n/a pipe on a mk2 dp, in a mk1.
