Hi all
I have recently bought a mk2 GTD (in the UK) and have decided to start mucknig about with the fuelling etc so this is my first post...
I want to start off slow so am keeping the original intercooler in place for now. I have gotten myself a boost controller and boost gauge (cheapy one so god knows about accuracy) and would like to play with fuel pump and boost, no EGT gauge yet so not going to go too aggressive... I have got Sunday to play but then cannot do much else for a couple of weeks so don't want to end up with something undriveable...
I have read through loads and loads of how to's, forum questions and other info and think I have a pretty good idea of what I am going to be doing but want to do a bit of idiot proofing before I dive in and disable the car!
So with the fuel pump I will be following the guide from the FAQs on this site. there is plenty of info to use there and after a few reads I think I have it all making sense (I am not going for the governor mod for now).
Here goes:
1) If I follow the fuel pump mods and don't get round to the boost pressure will this be bad for the car? Should I avoid doing this if I can't do the boost stuff? Or will it make some improvement?
2) Regarding smoking exhaust, is this a case of trying a setup, going for a blast to see how much smoke there is and coming back to tweak? If you get a lot of smoke is this particularly bad or just personal preference?
3) The first job listed on the how to is to wind in the max fuel screw as far as you dare. It says you can run up to 1200 RPM with idle screw right out. Does this mean you will idle at 1200 all the time? My tacho is out of action, does anyone have a recommended initial amount to wind in? perhaps idle screw right out, then max fuel in until it sounds similar to standard tickover (or am I talking rubbish)?
On to boost...
4) As I see it the plumbing for the new pipes should be as follows: out of turbo body -> tee off for gauge -> tee off for manual boost controller -> in to wastegate. The other side of the boost controller can be vented to atmosphere. Is this correct?
5) I had a quick look / fiddle in the engine bay and it seems the pipe I need to get to is very short and right at the back of the turbo set up. Can these mods be done with turbo in place? Or do I need to unbolt it and do it on the bench? The pipe that was there did not feel like flexi hose but maybe that's because it is covered in crud...
6) My cheap boost controller and gauge came with hose but I guess the turbo outlet will get a bit hot!?! what do people generally use to attach the hose on to here? OR will it be ok using what I have?
7) If I don't get round to blanking off the BOV I guess there is still a little extra boost to be had? I have read the BOV will cause a big flat spot so I guess I could look out for that and then back off the boost a little? Or should I just keep the boost controller turned right down until I can do the BOV blank?
Any thoughts and help would be well appreciated and wish me luck!
