1.6TD and AAZ pump internal differences?
« on: May 03, 2015, 08:22:30 am »
So.  I replaced my 1.6D with a 1.9 crate long block.  Since I didn't have any turbo parts around and my 1.6 NA pump was just rebuilt I am currently running on the 1.6 NA pump no turbo.

I have been gathering parts, and about to do the conversion to turbo.  I got was supposedly a 1.9 TD pump core from a guy on eBay almost a year ago.  I checked the part number the other day, 068 130 107AM and it comes back as a 1.6 TD code from a CY engine.  Grrr.

At first I was pretty bummed, but then wondered of maybe this pump isn't much different internally from the AAZ?  I know the 1.9 pumps have a longer snout to work with the cast pump bracket.

So would this still make a decent pump on a 1.9 turbo?

I just did a chipped AHU swap into a mk1 for a guy.  It pulls like a freight train.  I'm hoping I can make my IDI 1.9 perform like this or a little better even.

The longer snout has nothing at all to do with the pump bracket.  The distance between pump body mounting surface and pump sprocket is the same on each of the VW VW pumps regardless of which bracket they use.  Provided you use the correct sprocket and the diameter of the snout is not too large (as is the case with the ALH or late AAZ pumps w/ sprocket/hub), any 4-cyl VW VE pump will mount up to any 4-cyl VW bracket.  The AAZ sprocket is offset toward the pump by the exact same amount that the snout is longer.

The AAZ camplate is more appropriate to the 1.9 displacement.  The 1.6TD has a much better LDA boost fuel enrichment.  Best would be to get an AAZ camplate and install it in the 1.6TD pump.

What timing will you use the aaz or 1.6td one?

Thanks for the replies.  Sorry for the slow response, I have been pulled 5 ways from Sunday lately.

Thanks a bunch.  I read somewhere a long time ago that the snout on the pumps that mount to the cast brackets had a longer snout than the ones that use the stamped bracket, like a Mk1.
I have read that the boost pin in my 1.6 pump is preferable(assuming someone didnt already rob it and replace it with a 1.9 pin).  So is everything else other than the cam plate the same?  Such as the pumping chambers and nozzles?

What timing will you use the aaz or 1.6td one?

Timing as in the timing spec?  Got me..

I am trying my best to peice this stuff together.  Its been like getting blasted in the face with a fire hose, and I am trying my best to process all of it.  I could be wrong, but I suspect the timing setting/spec is closely related to the pop pressure of the injectors?  I think the later injectors pop at a higher pressure, and would therefore be set to a higher spec.

Another thing I need to figure out is injector pipes.  Again, I have a 1.6 NA pump currently on my 1.9.  At first I tweaked some 1.6 pipes to fit, in time they must have cracked and began to leak.  After doing that a few times I located some 1.9 IDI pipes, and still had to tweak them somewhat to fit, and now about 10,000 miles later, they are leaking again.  Is there a difference in discharge nozzles I need to be aware of?  I am guessing alteast part of my problem is I am still on the stamped steel Mk1 bracket, but I have a cast bracket and gasser mount I can switch to next time.  I want to get the fuel to stop leaking :(

In the end, other than getting the fuel to stop leaking my goal is to be able to get about 110hp or so.  So if I could get some help on what parts to use from the different pumps, that would be great.  I have a couple more AAZ pump cores coming now, so I can get the cam plate.

Is there any difference in the 1.6 NA and 1.9 TD injectors, other than the pop pressure?  Can I have the diesel shop just reset the pop pressure on my current injectors or do I need 1.9 TD injectors?  Or for my goal am I better off with a totally different injector?
