Used Engine Value???
« on: August 24, 2014, 10:40:12 am »
"Early 1.6 and 5 pseed trans pulled from a vw truck. Engine turns over and has good compression. Trans turns freely and shifts smooth. Selling as a pair for $600 "

Is this a good deal?? Yeah, I know......"it depends", right?????

I've sent an email and asked a few questions.

Any tips on buying a use engine-tranny combo like this? What to look for if I go take a look???

This would just be a backyard rebuild-learning project for me, not connected with my current car maintenance.

that would be 300 for each, not bad. N/A's I don't think have the value as the TD's do, but if you are rebuilding them and you are thinking of them strictly as a core I would purchase them...if I was looking for them that is.

I probably won't be sure on the year of the engine............
I'm wondering whether it would work in my 1991 MK2.
Here's a picture for what it is worth.........
I see what I think is a mount or damper just above the crank pulley.
Mine doesn't have that.
As an aside, I see what looks like a smashed oil filter?????

If it is a 1.6, would my 1991 mounts work?????

ADDENDUM: from the seller

"It was running when it was pulled. Pickup was rolled. It came out of an 86 caddy. Did not smoke. Had around 150k on it. Engine has not ran for about a year. Was kept full of oil so the engine did not seize. Injector pump still squirts."

Hmmm????

The water pump might have the 40mm pulley (?) not sure from the picture.  If it is the 40mm then it may be a 11mm CR block and more prone to cracks.  373B heads more often than not were found on 11mm blocks (but not always).

The PO has the year wrong on the caddy anyways (discontinued 1983 or 1984).

Yeah if it's an 11mm I'd at least pull the head to do both a MLS head gasket and head stud conversion if the block isn't cracked.  They're save-able, but catching them before they crack an occurrence that is getting rarer and rarer.  IDK if the seller would be willing to take the head off and check, though.

It's often impossible to say.

I've exchanged some email with someone in the midwest who is looking for a 1.6d longblock and can't seem to find one at any price locally.

zukgod1 gave one away with "as is where is has to be gone in the next 48 hours 'cause the house has sold" terms over the weekend.

Last year i was offered two of them for $100.

And yet I've seen them sell for some bucks too.

After thinking and talking to people I realized something. If it is all MKI stuff then you may have a handful of stuff to do. The Trans will not work in an MKII without modification as the holes will not line up to mount it. Also the passenger side engine mount IP bracket would have to be switched out. So I would not do it for the money asked. Also, the year of 86 would say 12mm, but no MKI engine mounts then, as stated above you have no clue what year engine it is. If it was 11mm I would run from it. I don't think that even with studs it is worth putting money into it as too many seem to be cracked already before you open it up.

Enough bad. I'll look elsewhere. I'd want something that would at least bolt in !!

Thanks for the tips.
