vacuum pump help

I am swapping a 1.6td out of a german gtd into my '79 rabbit.  Am  having a few problems and am hoping someone can help me sort them out.  First off it is slow to start when "cold", seeing how its 90+ outside it really isn't cold, just hard to start.  Then once it gets hot, it will die and not start again until it has had a chance to cool down.  My mechanic believes this is a problem with the injection pump.  He also mentioned that there was a vacuum pump that he was going to leave off of the engine, since my original 1.5l didn't have it, but it wouldn't start with out it.  However, it is connected to anything.  Could this be the cause of the "cold start" and "run hot" problems?  Where should this vacuum pump go to?  Sorry for my ignorance/lack of knowledge

vacuum line goes to brake booster with power brakes, the vacuum pump also needed to run the oil pump.

The first problem is the clueless "mechanic"... I'd delete that.

Next I'd put clear lines in and out of the IP, get a set of tools for timing the IP, a compression tester, an early Mk2 fuel filter and a Bentley service manual.
