Airboxes and breathing? - TD engines
« on: May 03, 2013, 04:34:35 pm »
Ok so my 1.6TD I have in a baywindow camper van, setup like you find in the Vanagnos where you lean it over at 50degress, because its an engine conversion the exhaust system is home made as are alot of the parts for install.

For the entire duration of the van having this engine I have just had a big cone type filter fitted to an adaptor and recently I have decided it makes alot of noise!

So theres not really any room for an airbox, certainly not a factory golf type one, so I thought well surely an airbox is an airbox and will reduce the noise if I make one? I have an original oil bath filter from the bay (not mine as mine orignally had the later paper ones) and its a nice canister that would just about fit in the engine bay and house the cone filter inside with some mods, I looked at the air inlet which seems to be a trumpet of about 1" ! the supply pipe that would go to the carb on the petrol engine is around 2.25" which I think is the same as the turbo so I dont think the outside will be a problem its just the intake nozzel part.

So heres a picture of the type I have:

I was thinking it would probably need to be opened out but I am sure on golfs and stuff equally they dont have big nozzels into the airbox? I think the actual pipe that goes into the box after the nozzle is probably ok, but I wondered if anyone knew the size so I could maybe resize to suit the application?

Any other ideas/suggestions?

If you want a standard "air box" not a cone filter that's fairly compact and adaptable, you can look closer to home. Get one of these "coffee cans," they come on old Jaguars. A cylindrical paper filter is housed inside.

Well I want to use the Standard baywindow filter housing as it then looks kind of 'factory'(despite the fact its a bay with a turbodiesel!), but use my cone filter inside.

What it boils down to is its stuff I already have I dont want to buy anything extra, but have the ability to make a fair amount if need be.

My main goal however is noise reduction.

To answer your question, the stock airbox is awful restrictive and I wouldn't count on it being a "good" design. I can still measure if you want, but I would say it's like a 3" x 1.5" opening. I always cut holes in the bottom of the airbox. The air isn't "metered" or anything, give it as much air as it can get. Your main concern is the temperature of the air, you don't want hot air if you can help it, and also to prevent the intrusion of water. If I were you I would just saw most of that "spout" piece completely off so that the can has a nice big opening. It actually looks like it's 2 separate pieces of metal so maybe you can just separate them and have a clean hole?

I just found it on google images, and saw that it was on vortex so it seemed logical to share it here.
