Need an alternator Bracket for an AAZ
« on: April 27, 2013, 03:29:27 pm »
Hey guys,
I'm in need of an alternator bracket for an AAZ or whatever it takes to fit this set-up

The original engine had a 1.6 pump bracket and I believe this alternator bracket is a 1.6 as well.
I am changing out the 1.6 IP bracket to the 1.9 and would like to do something with the alternator bracket also. It didn't hold the alternator aligned properly and I milled the holes a bit a long time ago. I'm hoping there's a better bracket available in someones stash.

The odd bolts holding the water pump are what came on the used block I purchased from a friendly Canadian - maybe he has the alternator bracket as well and will chime in.

Thanks

That is a 1.6 alternator bracket.  If you are not going to install A/C or power steering, then IMO, that is the best bracket to use.  In order to get everything to align correctly, get the crank pulley and water pump pulley from either a 1.6 diesel vanagon (two belt) or a non-A/C mk1 rabbit/jetta/caddy (single belt).  If going that route, then replace those water pump fasteners with normal bolts and just run straight through alt bracket and water pump on the three.  The other option is to use the serpentine setup that is native to the AAZ, but you will need to get the bracket with tensioner, alt, water pump pulley and serp belt and IMO it stresses the crank sprocket more.  If going that route, get the clutched alt pulley as well.

Thanks libby,
I do plan on sticking with the V belt - not a fan of the serp setup and one-way bearing either.

I already have the two pulley set-up as well - at least I think it's the one you mention. What I really need is just one more of those fancy bolts (the shorter one). Then all would work out I think. I did have to slot the bracket though right after I bought the van to get the belt to line up properly.

In this photo, you can see that one of the odd bolts hasn't got the second shank. If it did, the bracket I have would fit like a glove.

If the bracket is cast steel, I may weld a tab on the mounting base and reach over to catch the other fancy bolt. The slot is pretty much out of the side of the casting at that location anyway.

The 1.6 bracket is designed to fit directly against the water pump, not against those the shoulders of those bolts.  Those fancy bolts are what is used to attach the AAZ serpentine accessory bracket.  If using the 1.6 alt bracket pictured, then you can replace all of those fancy fasteners with regular bolts and run straight through the alt bracket and water pump.

Got it - thanks.
It's starting to look like an engine again instead of a boat anchor with four holes in it ;D

After libbydiesel pointed out that the bracket I have will work fine - I'm back in business.

I did have to slot it a bit to get it to line up properly with the water pump and crank sheaves but it all good now.

I used a 3/8 rod clamped in the groove as the pulley faces/flanges are different widths. A straightedge was close but this worked much better.
