need advice on a 86 golf idi

hey all

looking at picking up a 86 or 87 golf with 1.6idi

was told by the po that the shifter linkage broke twice, so thats why hes selling it

hes got a new linkage as part of the deal, but its not installed

hes asking $700cdn

thoughts?
Now: 00 2dr Golf TDI, 03 Jetta Wagon TDI, 02 2500HD Duramax - :)
Then: 69 SC Transporter, 84 Rabbit GTI, 87 Fox GL, 91 Golf IDI, 96 Passat Wagon TDI, 97 Jetta IDI - :(

What's the body like; when were the plugs/t-belt done last?

maybe the shifter linkage is breaking because hes driving it too hard? shifting too hard? bad motor/transmission mounts???  How can the linkage break so often?

Lots of old VW's I've driven have very vague shifters because of worn bushings.  You've got to use The Force, not just force.  Maybe he's not a finesse type of guy and thinks he can find gears better by jamming it....

Sounds like a good deal if there's nothing else weird wrong with it.

naw, linkage is easy to install.  you can take the whole thing apart and put it back together again with basic hand tools.
88 Jetta TD....sold for $1000, bought an 06 Cobalt, clearing out the diesel jetta stuff now

decided to pass - couldnt get the doors even opened, interior was full of junk...
