Fix 1.6 or find a 1.9?
« on: March 14, 2012, 04:35:51 pm »
So, my 1.6td has problems (IC shaft bearings froze, need new crank, pistons, bore job, etc). Been contemplating the rebuild, and thinking maybe it's worth looking at a 1.9td replacement, or maybe even a TDI... I like the idea of the mechanical pump, so the TDI is probably out, but the TDI is most likely more available than the TD.

What's the "popular wisdom" here? I want to have a reliable running car, mostly for in-town use, but also for making some 100 mile + trips. I liked the mileage I was getting with the 1.6td (over 40), but sometimes I'd like a little go-power too, especially with the jerk in the Grand Prix GTP around here just asking to be put in his place...

Of course, as usual, budget is "as cheap as possible", LOL, but I figure I'm going to be spending $1000+ rebuilding this 1.6. Would that $ be better spent on a 1.9 td instead? Are 1.9's fairly easy to find, and what's a fair price in good running condition (I'm in the US, but very close to Canada)?

Thanks for any input on this.

I do not think the 1.9 AAZ's were ever sold in America, so it may be tough to find one.. However they do make some good power stock.

But! if you buy a used engine it COULD need a rebuild as well, and then you could be in the hole for more than you want.

1.6TD's have been known to make some good power too. They can easily produce that which the 1.9 makes.

There's getting to be a lot of AAZ's around up here, you could drive up and thrash one in over a weekend if you found the right seller.... I like min in a mk2. Better engine than the 1.6

Better engine than the 1.6

Oh for sure, it is in every way better. Probably the reason why Volkswagen replaced the 1.6 with it in the NA market ;) lol.

i think i will stick to the 1.6 engines.. they actually keep all their rod caps, and main caps in place..  :o
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

I cannot really say as I have ran a 1.6, but not a 1.9aaz. I liked everything about my 1.6 except the EGT and the precups. AAZ has precups too, and with my pump would probably have the EGT as well. I would probably go with what you have  to make life easier.
