Glowplug Checking?
« on: July 27, 2004, 12:42:15 pm »
Hey guys,

Lately my car has required excessive cranking to get it started after sitting cold for a while, sometimes even 3-4 seconds of cranking. (Unless I wait for the actual glow plug relay click instead of just the light).

I was thinking that its either my glowplugs, or a fuel leak somewhere. I think it would easier to test the glowplugs first, but I really don't know how.

What are the symptoms of malfunctioning glowplugs? Will the conduct electricity if they are working/not working? Do they have a specific resistance?

What’s the best way to check to see if my glowplugs are working?

Thanks a lot guys!

Will Pomeroy.

first check that relay and strip fuse are ok, by checking power at 1st plug / buss bar

for quick and ez GP check, I use a test light ($0.99) disconnect all but one plug from Buss bar, check each plug for continuity at tip (with bat +)  no light = bad plug   Warning, it is possible to have a bad plug, and have continuity (bit rare, cause = partial burn-out)
