5 spd man trans problem i think
« on: January 16, 2012, 10:54:51 am »
hey there so i belive i have a problem with my transmission, not sure though.  my car when driving on snow or ice and gear 1-5 or even reverse, only the pass side tire spins, which really leaves me stuck sometimes going up hill. is this normal? or is something really wrong? simple fix or just wat it is?  if i turn the wheels back and forth left to right vis versa the drivers side will spin once in a while but this is a pain in the a*s as i can hardly make it up hills with snow or ice on them with winter tires.  ive got no idea which trans it is other then a 5 spd manual behind a 1.6TD

exact same thing my car was doing last night.. use ZERO throttle to take off.. that works better, then it doesnt just blow the pass side tire off.

short of splitting the trans and installing an LSD, or welding up the spider gears, your SOL.. i dont think they make a mini-slip kit anymore..

try taking off without giving it any throttle. and dont take off on hills. start out on flat ground and attempt to kinda coast up the hills, dont power down trying to go up them, it just makes you spin worse.

and in ice, once your spinning, it does not get better.. it just keeps spinning till your tire melts the ice away down to the road..

Either get better tires, chains or an LSD. LSD's are expensive though.

Check the left front brake.  Other than that you can do a 20%, 80% or LSD differential.

what he said!

better tires help out immensely..

and if its that slick out, you should have a set of chains..

Limited Slip Differential. Think of it like positraction. If one wheel slips, the other spins/ grips.

its fine. its just an open differential. any open differential will do this, given the right conditions..

if NO tires were spinning, then you would be having severe issues.. but being that power still gets to the tires, its fine.

I do fine in the winter in Maine with studded snow tires. I rarely slip much and as long as im not driving on a frozen river of ice I can get anywhere.
