Oil Filter Bracket Choke plug - Missing
« on: January 02, 2012, 10:57:37 am »
Hi guys, I am rebuilding an AAZ engine, and I have noticed that my oil filter housing/bracket does not have the "choke" part (refer to picture) in it.  I don't recall removing this part while dissembling the engine.  Is this a vital part? Also does anyone know what would happen if I didn't replace it?

Thanks
-Eric

Good question, I just took apart an aaz and it didn't have anything in it either. Being that it is fine thread by the notes I wonder if "choke" means plug and it is for only some engines?

Possibly.  It looks as if it would be hollow in the middle, Just a cylinder that narrows the passage "choking."  Thereby reducing the volume of oil that can pass through.

Was the AAZ ever made non-turbo and still designated the "AAZ" engine code?   My reason for asking this is that the passage that this "choke" affects is for the turbo oil feed.  If there are non-turbo factory AAZ engines then the "choke" may very well be a plug, stopping the flow of oil through that passage (the turbo oil feed line)

I think that there was. 2 of the aaz engines I have didn't have a turbo pump. You would have to ask the Canadians for sure, but I think they did come N/A.

What I just noticed on my oil filter bracket, I have part number 053115417A Which is the part number for ABA, ACC engines...   So, what now?

I think you Americans with the industrial 1.9s would be better to answer the non turbo AAZs. In vehicles, the AAZ was never installed without a turbo in North America. I am pretty sure I have read about some 1.9s without turbos in industrial applications in the states but I don't know if they were marked as AAZs.

In that case, I wouldn't expect them to be marked AAZ either.  I just wonder if anyone else, with an AAZ, can verify what oil filter bracket their engine is running,  I have money in this rebuild and don't want to chance trashing it.

I've had 2 AAZ and neither had the choke, but I did buy an oil filter housing from an AHU, and that DID have the choke in the turbo oil feed. It's wound deep into the feed passage in the housing.

It's essentially a large grub screw, with a 1.5mm (ish) hole through it to restrict flow to the turbo.

There was a 1.9NA in the UK, in Mk3 golfs - engine code 1y.

yea, most of the engines ive seen with that restrictor, were TDI engines. doesnt a TDI filter flange fit on an AAZ?
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

Yes, but I couldn't say what car my AHU filter flange came from, as it's got the filter mounted at 45 degrees  (which I needed to clear my engine mount) - I bought it off ebay.

I'll double check my old filter brackets, as one was from a late AAZ (UK).

our passats are NOT transverse.. they have north-south engines.. just like a RWD car..
