What exactly is a GTD?
« on: November 04, 2011, 02:55:14 pm »
I am looking for info on the GTD? Google Wikipedia are not very helpful other than mentioning the car and lots of crap about the new one. Was this just a GTi with a diesel? Was the engine different from the run of the mill TD?

I just scored an '86 GTI for a song and am going to diesel it as soon as I get it home.

When compared to a standard 1.6TD it had 10 brake more, intercooled as standard with a watercooled turbo

The actual build varied from market to market.

For the UK they seem to have been introduced on the Mk2 Golf, 4 door models with GTI trim levels but often only steel wheels.

4 doors you say??!! How sad. Any idea if the IC stuff was pirated off of another model or was it GTD specific?

A GTD has the power of a GTI with the economical-ness of a diesel ;)

the cooler looked similar to the G60 - not sure if it was the same.

not a great setup, sat on top of engine bay with poor airflow.

GTD's after '89 came with a water-cooled K14 if I'm not mistaken.. The IC setup is also GTD-specific. They also came with the SB-engine, 80 HP and 155 NM.

The IC setup is almost the same that was used on the G60 (both ICs were are the same size and were located in the same place), but the piping was totally different, as the G-Ladder is in front of the engine, so, the mouth location is different.

Until late 1989, there was only one GTD model: the one with oil-cooled turbo (KKK or Garret) and engine codes JR and MF (70 hp). Trim levels were same as standard GTIs, and came with steelies.

From 1990 onwards, there were 2 possiblities: Oil-cooled, and a new water-cooled turbo (KKK or Garret, again), engine codes RA and SB (80 hp).

Like I said, it varies from market to market.

The UK (as far as I know) only officially received the RAs and SBs all with watercooled turbos.

It varies quite a lot indeed!  I was just telling about LHD cars made in Wolfsburg.

Here in Spain we got the JR/RA models, both in 3-4 doors, but there weren't many options when you bought them: 13" steelies or BBS, 14" steelies, sunroof and a few more options.

Did the Mk1 GTD Emblem just mean Golf TurboDiesel, wheareas the Mk2GTD stood for Gran Tourismo Diesel, or luxury tourer. Was there a  JTD? Or a  PTD/QTD!

Funny thing about the last one is that I downloaded a German VAG mag that is devoted to an intercooled Quantum :o

What interior came with the early GTD compared with the early TD?

Interesting marketing concepts. No GTDs were offered in North America, but, by the descriptions above, it sounds as though a better intercooler, minor head work, pump mods, and probably a free-flowing exhaust would have contributed seriously worthwhile improvements in power. Is that a reasonable assessment?

It’s too bad that VW doesn’t see fit to offer its best economy cars with TD power, at least here in US.

Mark(The Miser)UK, was that intercooled Quantum/Passat a factory-offering, or an owner mod?
