Teh White Rabbit Build.
« on: September 22, 2011, 11:33:07 am »
Well I thought I'd do a build thread for my Girlfriend's Rabbit. I picked it up a few months ago and only recently started working on it.

The motor is just a 1.6 NA that was rebuilt by the previous owner. The tranny is just a five speed I had laying around from another diesel. I think it's a FN code or a FF. Basically i'm just cleaning everything up and putting it back together all neat and tidy n' stuff.

This is as she sits atm. Real crappy. In the woods. Where I do all my works.

Some real original stuff I found in the glovebox.

A pretty neato OEM shift knob.

The Rear

I started grinding away some seam sealer... Which I regret... Because it led to...

Sigh... Anywhere I ground I painted it with POR-15. I hate my self for doing it because now I have to paint the bay. But whatever I guess.

The car is 95% rust free and the only rust is surface rust. So... It was silly to grind so much... But I guess it will look good...

And a preview of what is to come.....................

thats a wolfsburg shift knob. almost looks like a bug shifter knob. had the same one in a couple different bugs..
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

Yeah I know. I think they came in Rabbits too tho. This car is 99% oem. Although I guesss if the owners were to swap one thing I guess it would be the knob.

Why grind on that car when you have Coke on the front support?  Just pour a little bit of that acid on the rust, brush and wash off.

Looks like you have your hands full.  Interior OK after all this time?  Let me guess you need a headliner.

The interior is pretty mint. Dash is cherry. Door cards are awesome. It looks like no one has ever driven this car. But yes it does need a headliner re-wrap and i'd like to upgrade the seats. I have a full set of GTI seats in ok condition that I may reupholster a red plaid and do the headliner in the same.

I do have to keep telling myself "It's a daily driver" so I stop my self from going to far.

Oh and I have burned a circle into the clear coat of a car after setting a can of coke on it that spilled slightly before.

Hence my suggestion for rust remover.  Stuff is nasty!  And you drink it?

If you plan to do a headliner I found that JoAnna fabrics carries the same soft sponge material that I got in a more expensive universal kit.  It is wide enough to go full across the roof with some to spare.  All you need is that good 3M spray glue and a warm day.  I did mine in an afternoon with a little later on the sunroof panel the next day.  Stuff was like 15 bucks a yard.  I bet you could do the whole thing for 40 bucks.  Well maybe 55 the glue is kind of spendy at about 10 a can.

Keep us informed,  Thanks
