t3 waste gate can removal
« on: September 21, 2011, 06:41:42 pm »
It looks like it can't be removed, i found one person using the search who said he did it.  it looks like its crimped on and pressed in and there is no way to remove it and lap the seat.  anyone ever get one of these off?

There's a flat coil spring that you remove (real PITA) to remove the cover so you can adjust the wastegate.

It fits in the grove where the crimp is. There's a tang on the flat coil spring to catch. I've removed it on a Mercedes T3, I doubt a VW T3 is different. Look with a magnifier if you can't see it. Stupid pita design.

i have a mercedes t3, i'll check tonight.  i did glance at it quickly yesterday, the wastegate was similar but slightly different if i recall correctly.  i am rebuilding a turbo for my jetta coupe, and i was hoping to be able to port the wastegate hole a little and lap the seat, i don't think its possible tho.  I will be putting the mercedes 45 trim compressor on to the vw center section.  i am not sure if the .36 vw housing can handle the flow that this compressor will be able to tho.  i talked to gpop shop about it a little bit and they said they didn't think it could, but with a stage 2 turbine wheel i might have good luck.

this might be like a K24/K26, and be a good idea on paper, but not actually work out that good..

the K24/26 hybrid has a huge restriction on the hot side, and can cause HIGH EGTs..

most people i know that have built them, have quickly taken them back off and went with non-hybrid turbos..
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

it is a similar hybrid, but the k24 has a .30 a/r exhaust housing, and an extra blade on the turbine wheel, where as the t3 has a .36 a/r, k26 has a larger compressor inducer than a 45 trim t3, so you are dealing with a more restrictive hot side, and a cold side that can flow even more than the mercedes turbo.  the 45 trim compressor mated to a .36 ar hot side was also a factory turbo on diesel scouts.  i think it should work well from all the numbers i have plugged so far, if not i can simply bolt the vw compressor back on. with out leaving the compressor map the 45 trim compressor is good for 180hp.  on the euro escort rs's, the .36 housing is good for 230hp(with a stage 2 turbine wheel.)  since gas vs diesel take roughly the same amount air for the same hp range, and diesel egts are much lower resulting in a lower volume of exhaust gas flow, i think the .36 is capable of flowing close to what the mercedes compressor can put out, with out the stage 2 wheel.  also comparing a k26 is hard cause there are quite a few different ones.
