When to replace timing belt?
« on: May 11, 2011, 12:45:55 pm »

I'm broke but I'm worried too... I installed a vw genuine timing belt and roller at around 55000 miles and now my car has 132000 miles on it.

So is it time tp change the belt or am I still within the recommended millage? My car is a 95 Golf AAZ. What it the recommended millage btw?

Cheers!

The Bentley recommends every 60,000 miles. I would say you're due, even the manufactures recommended 80k has elapsed.

I agree, it's time for a change.  You're playing with fire if you keep running it but most definitely inspect the belt to see if its visibly worn out.  Keep telling yourself "It's an interference engine"   ;D

Right!!

I inspected it like 7k miles ago and it looked pretty good to me! Whats kinda signs should I be looking for?

132k-55k=77k miles so I'm still within the manufacturers limit.

Haha stiff, but 100 percent right.

I dont know how much stuff is in Pakistan, but in US dollars yer lookin at a shop costin ya 400 to 600. The Bentley tells ya how to do it, but you will need a few special tools to get it done, as you are going to need to set the timing. Mr. Search can help you with some alternatives to the retail options for VW tools. I would bet now would be a good time for yer v-belts, and a new fuel filter while yer at it.

AutohausAZ.com in Arizona is hard to beat on quality brands and pricing. They give free shipping within USA on orders over $50.

Most of their parts use the VW number system - so you could compare clutch disc numbers.

Thanks Baron I already checked with them and they do not have it. All of them have the complete kit no one has just the clutch disc.

Okay so I ordered the parts and when I removed cam belt cover what do I see??!

Three cracks in the belt half the width of the belt.. And when I saw that I almost *** my parts! It seems like it would have snapped on the next crank.

And then the tensioner was equally bad too, It rolled very rough and would have seized too!!

I really want to thank everyone who insisted on changing the belt asap!!

cracks just on the outside layer of the belt? or cracks clear thru the belt?

every wasted timing belt usually has tons of cracks on the back side.. usually they stop at the kevlar cords tho, and dont crack so far as to where the belt can rip..

usually its not the belt breaking, but the teeth getting ripped off the belt, that ruin your head..
