injector pump trubleshooting

I recently changed the timing belt and water pump on my 91 ecodiesel.

I did not time the pump as advised in the Bentley manual, I just wanted to get the car started and fine tune the pump by ear if needed.

when I started the car it ran with a low idle even with the cold start lever all the way out.

I ran the car around the yard a few times, stopping to add coolant, wile adding coolant the car sputtered and died. I then tried starting it several times with no luck. I started the troubleshooting process, I checked the fuel system, stop solenoid, glow plugs, compression...and so on. The car will start, but only if I floor the pedal and pat the gas to keep it running, it wont idle.

I also ran the pump right off a fuel can just to rule out a fuel filter or clogged fuel line.

I'm going to time the pump one more time with the dial indicator tomorrow.

Go back and check through your initial timing parameters.

As in - Set timing mark at #1 cylinder TDC by the flywheel / bellhousing pointers.

Fit injection pump pulley lock. (1 tooth off on inj pump sprocket happens a lot to people on belt jobs - and they will usually still run - but sluggish)

Fit cam slide/lock. (This is usually the parameter that gets in trouble) It should just slip right in place. If not - adjust it accordingly. And use appropriate shims under the slide for a tight fit.

Normally after a belt job, you'll be within .05mm of the pre-existing injection timing setting one side or the other.

That is IF you had all parameters set right AND adjusted belt tensioner while the cam pulley was still loosened.

Re-check those parameters before you proceed with a dial indicator.
