Turbo coupe T3 on a 1.6L IDI
« on: April 08, 2011, 08:14:34 am »
Any chance a T3 from an 85 stick shift turbo coupe would spool before 3K RPM on an 85 1.6L IDI NA engine?

I know this turbo is fairly large.  Let's assume 2.5" full straight exhaust (all mandrel bends), 2-3/4" or 3" intake tubing with a large conical air filter, all mandrel bent charge tubing of appropriate diameter, no IC (at least initially), stock NA IP with fuel screw turned in and possibly gov mod, and an intake off of a late 80s gas 8v engine with a fabricated inlet flange to replace the T-body to allow charge pipe connection.

I would consider a Giles pump if that would be the way to make this work.

I have tried to research this, some people say it will never spool and will be undrivable, others say it could be made to work.  I am not interested in being bombarded by nay-sayers who have no experience with this or similar combinations, no dis-respect intended.  I would like to hear of experiences from people who have tried or or personally know someone who has experimented with such things, please.

Thanks

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

Yup, that's what it is.  IIRC, they were 2.3L and came with a 0.60 trim.  I have a rebuilt turbo sitting in the crawlspace.

Care to elaborate on that statement?

What kind of Mercedes turbo should I be looking for?

Not viable with the existing turbine/housing?

A friend of mine put one from a 2.3 ford on a na 1.6 in his golf. I'll try to get him to chime in on this.
Is yours an IHI( Warner-Ishi)?

I have the T3, I believe it is bigger than the IHI used on the later turbo coupes.

Any info from someone who has tried this would be appreciated.

one off of a 300d, but that would be a turbo for more if you are looking for somewhat big power numbers
