Can I run my IDI diesel on Natural gas?

Hey guys!

I have three Golfs and all of them are diesels; diesel prices have hiked up alot here and it is unfordable for me now. I've heard that diesels can be run on natural gas and some people have done it in their cars here. So is it true?

If yes... how does it work and how much would it cost? And will I benefit from it at all?

its just an aid.. they burn diesel as the main fuel, and NG as the secondary fuel.

it also needs a special "carburator" to mix the right amount of NG into the intake air..

Used vege oil?.. is also called bio diesel and svo or something? What do I have to do to the car to run it on this?

you need 2 tanks to run WVO, and also need 2 tanks to run NG.

the WVO system will probably be ALOT cheaper..

you can take a gasoline vehicle and run it on straight propane/NG..

ive HEARD of someone injecting liquid natural gas with the injection pump, but idk how that worked.. cant even really imagine it working..

CNG is very common here so thats the easiest to get. Liquid NG is very expensive and special equipment is need to liquidify NG.

i dont know much about WVO, but i know that if you dont warm up and cool down on diesel fuel, your engine will have coked up rings in no time, and then the rings will start over-boring the cylinders.. and then your compression will go down, and then your engine will quit running/get addicted to ether..

As mentioned, you can meter in some methane to supplement diesel - letting the diesel ignite the methane, but if you get too much methane in the mix, it will detonate far too early and destroy the engine.  If you really want to run ONLY on methane, the diesel is quite appropriate. However, you need a carburetor/injector system, and you need to add an ignition system to the engine while eliminating the injection pump.  In other words, re-design much of the engine (it IS done with commercial diesels for oilfield work - as stationary engines).  It's a lot cheaper to make and use bioD.
