Going against the grain

I've bought 80% of whats needed for a nice diesel build. From all the TD parts, to the g60 intake.


I think I've changed my mind. The Rabbit this was planned for if getting a stock 1.6 n/a to use as a DD.


Then it occurred to me, the 8v/16v engines share this bottom end. As a bonus, I have arp hardware for everything, and the crank is forged. Now I'm considering an 8v/16v build ontop of this engine. Parts would be a hell of a lot easier to come across, and I won't mind the cheaper powerplant.

Anyone know what this would take, which head to slap on, which piston/rod combo for the diesel stroke crank?

If you put a 16 valve head on it, you will bend the valves.  The bore is too small for that.  Use a gas lower end on a gas head, a diesel lower with a diesel head.  A 1.6 diesel crank is the same as a 1.8 gas crank.  I think what you want is an Audi bubble block 2.0l with a 1.5l diesel crank and a 16 valve head, That combo will need custom rods and pistons and would be a fairly zingy engine once wound up.

i saw a guy build an 8v out of a 1.6td block, he used the gas intermediate shaft, but he got the bonus of oil squirters... how ever much they matter.  honestly tho if you wanna build a gas engine, just get a gas engine, they're cheap and plentiful in any flavor

squirters, and its already a 2.0 plus, there cheap as hell..

only reason to use a diesel block is if you wanna run an ASS LOAD of nitrous..

well, i looked at them with my eyes, and my eyes said that the ring lands are stainless inserts.

i left a piston out in the rain, it corroded, the ring land did not. nor is the ring land magnetic.

why does everyone think im getting defensive in every post that i write up?

And your conclusions happen to be incorrect, as the inserts are not stainless........

According to the 1.5 SAE paper, it's a Ni-Resist insert cast into the piston to reduce ring land wear.

The proper giles pump for the setup is a bit pricey. No TD pumps here at all (just three n/a pumps)

 Got a passport? I'm an hour and a half east of you..... Got a complete MF code td with a busted timing belt (two in fact). Gets you a td pump, K24, manifolds, etc..... One was a volkswagen rebuild (mileage unknown) when it broke the belt. Slap your head on and away you go. Make me an offer, I'll help you pull it when you get here.
If you really want to go gasser, I've got a 1.8 out of a '92 jetta I just pulled to diesel teh car, was running a week and a 1/2 ago, CHEEP!
