1.5 turbo diesel Will it fit? Longitudinal mounting vs Transverse mounting

Hi Guys

I was wondering if anyone could help me out.  I've been a lurker for a long time and i love this site with its amazing in-site and information.  I live in Australia and drive a 1.5 diesel golf (rabbit ).  We only got the 1.5 diesel golf in mk1's and turbos did not exist.   I have come across a 1.5 turbo diesel motor out of a passat. The owner is willing to sell just the engine however it is 2000  kms away so i cant visually check it out.

 He said that it is a stock turbo diesel but i cant find any information about stock 1.5 turbo diesels only 1.6 turbo diesels.  Does anyone have any info on a stock 1.5 turbo diesel motor?  Did Vw ever make a stock 1.5 turbo diesel...  the owner says that it has the piston cooling squirter's.  Could it possibly be that he has mistaken the motor for a 1.6?

  Ive been looking at technical drawings of the Longitudinal mounting vs Transverse mounting and the turbos seen to be mounted different.  Will this turbo be able to be placed in a mk1 and have everything fit in.  I hate to buy the engine go to the hassle of sending it down then for it not being able to fit in a mk1.

VW never made 1,5 turbodiesel, so it must be 1,6.
1,5 mounts will fit, but Passat turbo is low mounted, it wont wit transverse.

Thats the info i was looking for.  i wouldn't be able to find any of the other add ons to change anything so it looks like i will have to give this one a miss.  You guys saved me a lot of hassle and frustration...

Ok. Someone who lives near me ended up buying the car to wreck and didn't need the engine.  Turns out that it IS a 1.6td out of a mkII golf or Jetta... Dont know how it got to Australia but the good news is that i won it now...

Besides the engine mounts what else do i have to change over to make it fit into a mk1 golf.  I know i have to change the oil pump and the sump... but is there anything else that might catch me out...

why do you need to change the oil pump and pan?

if its out of a mk2 car, then the oil pan and pump will work in a mk1 car..

Curious,what vehicle is the engine coming out of and what vehicle are you putting it into?  I can help you out on what would need to be done having done MANY VW/Audi swaps in my daze.

aside from making a 1.5td for r&d i am pretty sure they were never sold to the public, by the time turbo diesels were sold vw had already switched all their engines to 1.6's.  the only thing that i can think of is when someone had built a 1.5td and put a td lda on top of a 1.5 pump and sent it off to be rebuilt, bosch actually had specs for such a pump, that the the rebuilders used.

ive seen it on paper, the original VW 1.5TD.. it was floating around on here.. they did make them, dunno if you could buy them tho..

4-5 years ago, we went over this, Saurkraut will vouch for me, there were 1.5TDs

I'd still say never from factory. Aftermarket yes, maybe even dealer installed?

they made them at vw, they were never available for sale tho, i remember seeing all that stuff as well

alright guys, i never once said they were released to the public.. i said something along the lines of "small numbers MAY HAVE been released, but i doubt it"

im not trying to say they were mass produced.. just saying that they were indeed produced..

Ok Ive added some photos of the engine.  It is a JR code and it has a 'top mounted' turbo.  The engine mounts are obviously from a passat.  I will have to change this out for the front mount off my 1.5 and i will change over all the alternate brackets to mount it on the front side of the engine.





and the engine sump is deeper on one side.  It hangs approximately 1 inch lower than my oil sump off my 1.5.

 The oil pump and filter are canted to the right slightly which will definatly have to be changed over as it fouls the front mount bracket.  One difference i noticed between the oil pump is that on the turbo motor it pumps from the top to the turbo where as on the 1.5 it pumps into the vacuum pump.  On the turbo motor there is what looks like an oil feed hole into but it has nothing on it.  Does anyone with a 1.6 not have an oil line feeding into the vacuum pump?  If this is the case i could i just swap the oil pump off the 1.5 and plug the turbo straight in?



So currently to get this engine to fit into my Mk1 golf it looks like i will have to change over the sump, oil pump, and mounting brakets.  Anything else anyone can think of?

that oil pan will fit a mk1.. you can put just about any oil pan in a mk1..

you will need to replace the timing belt and tensioner. or atleast i would..

transverse oil pans ARE deeper on one side.. the engine leans towards the back..
