1.9 td aaz > 1.6 td sb downpipe swap
« on: January 09, 2006, 12:05:35 pm »
I get 1.9 td aaz downpipe. Is it bigger than mine 1.6 dp? Do I need new flex or I can just put straight pipe in this place? Is this swap worth? 1.9 dp has 2 1/16 internal diameter (flange) and 2' external diameter (as on the picture), is it much bigger than in 1.6?
Can I adapt this flange to mine garrett T2 flange by making new holes (T2 is same as kkk k14 and k24)?
Big thanks for help, I'm going to put 2,20' freeflow exhaust and I only need downpipe :)

i dunno if mkIII pipe is a direct fit, some guys on this board have mkIII DPs on mkII cars so i'll let them speak up if they want.

an option for you could be going with the passenger performance 2.5" mandrel pipe. it will flow better than any stock pipe you could use/adapt... and the price is reasonable. find them in the vendor section of this site.

i dicked around for over a year thinking i'd make my own DP/exhaust eventually... but i recently just broke down and bought the PP 2.5" pipe, simple/affordable solution esp when time is of value.

The downpipes I sell have a 4" radius in the bends to help the exhaust flow without restriction, if you look at the 1.9TD DP you will see that right out of the turbo it makes a very harsh and steep turn, this creates a restriction. Also my Dp's are 2.5" in diameter to aid in maximum flow. I reccomend buying one of mine or making a one yourself using 2.5" mandrel bends.

Why is the ID larger than the OD? Is it a TARDIS?

You'll probably not find many people here familiar with that concept, pretty obscure stuff, that Dr Who....

Anyway, I think the 4" refers to the bend radius and not the radius of the pipe through the bend.

Yeah, brought back memories. Imagine how the TARDIS might feed on the mind of a 10 year old, that was me. Many nights awake, grappling with the concepts... :) I hear there was a new series produced lately, haven't seen anthing yet. Should be interesting.

I apologize for mine and lilybapa's odd thread hijack...

I know that 2,5 custom made would be the best, but I'm not able to get it at the moment because I'm going to put exhaust on friday (tommorow) and I don't know if 1.9 downpipe would be better than stock 1.6 (1.6 has thicker, iron walls?). Will I notice any difference in 1.9 and 1.6 downpipe? Anyway I'm going to make mandrel bend dp in the future

put the rest of the system on, but leave the downpipe you have until you get the 2.5" one. when it arrives, swap the old one out.

i'd bet you'll notice a difference between mkIII dp and 2.5" mandrel even on an otherwise-stock car.

I have made a couple mk3 TD ones but I haven't had the time to copy one so I can make a jig, I know you aren't far from here, so if you are interested in one I can make you a good deal and than I'll copy it and make a jig, I've had a few people looking for 1.9TD DP's. I'm just wrapping the last batch of 10 dp's right now so if any of you are wondering where your DP is its on its way, I'm going to ship them this afternoon.
