i'm going to build a how to 1.6na t 1.6TD thread. need advice
« on: December 10, 2010, 02:26:41 pm »
so i am a noob. this site has done amazing things to teach me almost everything i need to know. it has been one of the most useful sites since i've bought my little caddy, so i want to put something back into it.

i bought a turbo and i think all the fittings i need from burn_your_money a long while ago, and i'm just now getting ready to install everything. i read the Bentley manual, and convinced myself i'm ready. and so today i start cleaning everything up and i'm a little confused...

the oil pressure line in the bentley manual looks way different than mine does. and i'm not sure what some of the rubber pieces do.
please forgive my noobness, everything you guys do to help me will be made into a tutorial to help other noobs such as me do this in the future.

here are the goods, excluding the TT downpipe. please share your thoughts!

i'm planning on doing a compression test, and obviously an oil change during the conversion. anything else i should do before i start?

thanks for all your help.

moved this into the IDI section for now... if it gains steam and becomes a good FAQ I'll move it back and link it from the main FAQ.

that you very much! i didn't want to put the pics in the thread because i thought they would be bigger on the photo bucket to get a better look. the truck is an 81, it's dark now but i'll check the engine code later to see if it matches up. stupid question perhaps, but what do you mean by compressor? not for an AC?
not pictured is the oil cooler, it's under a newspaper, next in line for cleaning.

anybody have a part # on that bypass hose? just found a slit in it so i can't use it  :(
the 1.6 td parts are kind of hard to find in 'merica it seems. everyone looks at me like i'm nuts...

or if Gee-Bee makes a silicone one that would be rad, too.

The electronics are a little heater in the vent that prevents the formation of ice-crystals due to freezing of the moisture as the pressure drops rapidly going from the positive pressure of the vent tube to the negative pressure of the inlet to the turbo.  Wire it for 12 v when ignition is on, fused of course.

This is a stock piece? My vent hose does not have this on my '84 factory TD. It may have been removed though.

mostly just the COLD climates that got the emissions vent heater..

i didn't want to learn to weld. seemed like a sound investment!

Libby, thank you again. i got nervous because whenever i saw that piece it has automatic transmission in the description. i probably won't need that heater in sunny CA though.

I think the heater one of those things that VW added for a very specific set of circumstances - you would need a climate cold enough that the intake air flash froze the (hot) blowby gasses coming from the engine. It would need to be COLD for that to happen, like 20 below or more.

For the blowoff valve, I think Giles was selling some machined caps that would install in place of the valve thereby sealing off the hole.  Another option is to use a newer intake manifold (from a TDI, or even an AAZ) that doesn't have the valve at all.

slight issue. i'm trying to do this project this weekend, but i've run into a hitch.

the oil flange and oil cooler seem to be missing a part. here's what i have:

isn't there supposed to be a threaded pipe bit that holds it all together? i think it's called a union? and a flange nut. i don't have either. so either does anyone have exact measurements for the union? maybe something i can fabricate at a hardware store? or a part# for ordering wouldn't be terrible either. or how terrible would it be to not run the oil cooler? and no threads on the top of the flange for the oil return line. i guess i could get that piece at the hardware store, too.
