Quick valve seal question

No, I vote that you leave the old ones....and report back as to how much oil consumption you have.......

All you need to do is try a valve in and see if they grip. Additionally, you can prod one with your finger and see if they are flexible. If they are, then that is all that is required.

Taking them off might damage them and putting new ones on can also go wrong and a spring can jump out. Unless this head has been in a shop window for a coupe of years in direct sunlight, they will be good to go.

Working on swapping them out right now. When the seal is in the correct position, how much should the spring seat washer be able to move? They seem to be a little inconsistent between valves right now. I think I managed to screw up a couple seals tapping them in with a 11mm socket vs a 12mm.

It's been a while, but the spring disks seem to be the same between the exhaust, and intake. Thus they should all be on the same. Use a vernier gauge to check their seating depth. If not on snug, they can come off I believe.

Nothing life threatening will happen...
Having said that, I wonder how much carbon rises up the exhaust stem, and adds to the engine oil.
Does oil go down the inlet stems if your engine is turboed?

I'm talking about the discs that sit on the under side of the spring. I would think it would be impossible for these to go anywhere with everything installed correctly. Even without the springs installed, they can't be removed with the seal in place. I'm just curious how snug they should be under the seal. It feels like my seals are fully pressed into place, but this disc can still move around slightly. When I removed the seals, half of them pulled out with the disc firmly attached to the seal.

H'mm, are you suggesting that the replacements aren't as long as the originals? Look closely to see if the seal moves with the disc. Have you pushed a valve into position? That should tie everything into place...

The seal seems like it is firmly into place, but it doesn't not move with the disc. I already pulled out the 2 I screwed up, and it took almost as much effort as the originals.

OK I've thought about it
I've not done it for a while, but here is my thoughts:
 
The seals clamp onto the ends of the valve liner and are fixed.

Those spring washers MUST be loose. 

The reason that the washers must be loose, is because when a spring compresses; it rotates!

Therefore, unless the washers are free to rotate AND well lubed {I seem to recall this is true when fishing them out in the past} the spring will wear through the washer and then plough ['plow' for you foreigners] through the aluminium head too
