Best way to quiet your IDI!
« on: October 09, 2010, 12:05:14 am »
I replaced all my lifters and HOLY is it ever quiet!
Just thought i'd share that with everyone.
Such a massive difference... what i thought was injector noise was lifter noise.
what i thought was lifter noise was lifter noise.
what i thought was diesel combustion noise was mostly lifter noise!!!

lifters get super loud. my 1.8 gasser sounded almost as rattley as my diesel before i changed the cam and lifters.. then it got almost silent.
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

been thinking of doing this as mine seems a little over noisy(could be fine as im used to more modern diesels) and what i assumed was diesel knock seems unaffected by timing adjustments. i put it down to an injector issue as the engine had been stood for 7 years b4 i got it but maybe theres some tappet noise lurking there somewhere. ive had the rocker cover off to check the camshaft and theres no visible wear to anything.
