Bit more done over the last week or so.

Not as much as hoped but customers come before projects!
I worked last saturday but I was mightly hung over from Fun Loving Criminals playing locally, not a productive day at all!
EGT probe in, exhaust side almost complete, engine in, but I decided to sort the interior out and kinda work my way out from the centre!
Mounting the 24v alternator is the biggest pain at the moment, I'm almost wondering if I can use a T3 (vanagon) alternator but with a 24v regulator but I don't know enought about alternators to find out.
All my remote filter head stuff is here as is my oil cooler, just needs time now!
Oh, and it got some new rims, 6x16" ET30 5x112 mefro steels from Germany, trailer wheels basically, very strong indeed!

The $80k per vehicle was including spare parts contracts, training, so on, still pretty steep for 1980's dollars 

As others have stated, they are pretty common here in Canada, more so now that we have started using other vehicles like the G-wagon.  One guy near here must have a dozen at least, as well as matching trailers and such.

Unfortunatly that was the core vehicle cost i believe. the military only started TCO or total cost of ownership quoting recently. That's how we got 60 g wagons for the afgan mission for $306 mil. Do that math per g wagon. 90% spent in euros too. Nice rigs though.

Love the Iltis, truly a purpose-built machine and very capable.

Two Audi-prepped Iltis's finished the Dakar rally 1-2 in 1980 with the other two finishing in the top 10.  So Quattro's racing heritage started even before the Group-B days. 

Good luck with this, makes me jealous.

No idea how long the engine had been sat, seemingly the pump was foobared.
Put another on I found in a box of crap I had laying about, annoyingly that was toast also.
Put a 3rd on, up it went.
Tidy dart!

Arrgh,
I am terribly envious of you and your Iltis.

I have been in love with those for awhile,
they are supposed to compare to a Unimog and FJ40 as far as being unstoppable in dicey terrain.

But, if I am spending that kind of coin, I want a Schwimmwagen.
Ever seen a slammed Schwimmwagen with Porsche wheels???
Me neither.

Instead, I bought a THING (Kubelwagen)
and it will be a bit of a resto-rod..

Baxter,

    The iltis has been places the Hummer couldn't go. In exercises with the Yanks we would hole up in swampy hard to get in areas and the iltis would get us in and out. We would walk out for most patrols but the iltis was our bug out machine. I've also jumped one blowing out the shocks on all four corners and it still kept going. I just wish ours came in diesel instead of gas.

Not used it in anger yet, just done some local green lanes (old tracks, still public highways but not maintained) much like then one in the video.
Not got it stuck yet!
In fairness the Diesel is okay, but it doesn't rev like the petrol one so it's fairly limited really, it's awfully noisey and more or less flat out at 50mph.
However, I have had a pump rebuilt in the UK and the usual stuff I see through the workshop never get set to factory settings as they are a bit worn, I've set the pump (not thinking) a little advanced and I'm sure I can get it quieter by backing the timing off to where it should be.
It is just a frame with a bucket and some running gear, no sound deadening so I'm sure you can imagine what it's like!
I'm into top gear really quickly, it pulls like a train (1.3 tonnes!) and the brakes suck big fat hairy donkey dick!
Drums all 'round, I've spent enough for the time being, disc brake conversion to come at a later date!
