How to press in/out motor mounts on 1.6NA?
«

My research has shown that I will need to press out/in the motor mounts to replace them. Is there a special tool or DIY tool I can make for cheap? Bentley wasn't much help for some reason, except to show me that I have to take a hacksaw to the the rear passenger mount.
Thanks.

Is this for a mk2? You can buy the entire mount and bracket for almost the same price as just the bushing.

This is for a MK1 1.6NA with a 5-speed (FN) tranny.
What is a good parts source for mount with bushing already in? Couldn't find one at partsplace, blackforest, etc.?

as rallydiesel said it may be easiest just to purchase entire mounts. If this is not an option you will need the use of a hydraulic press. Most auto repair shops have them and will usually press the mounts in for a small fee, however the vw mounts require a bit of rigging to fit in the press especially the MKI 1.6 NA mount that also has the integrated IP bracket. So you will need to find someone who likes a challenge. I had to go to three or 4 shops before I found someone willing to help me out.

I was only able to remove the passenger side mount after cutting out the rubber and sawing through the inner shell. After that it came out very easily with a hammer and drift. I think I used a C-clamp style ball joint press to install the new mount but a hydraulic press would be a much better tool to use.
I used Techtonics' HD mounts and I think that was a bad idea, for all the vibration at idle...

Purchasing new mounts with everything already pressed in would be great. Any thoughts as to where? My usual suppliers don't seem to have anything. I'll keep looking, I guess.

Sorry, I just searched mk1 motor mount replacement and see what you mean. Looks like 95% of replacements are just the bushing alone. I looked at techtonics site and they don't carry diesel-specific bushing/bracket combos so that sort of sucks.

This is the only one I could find so far:
http://store.blackforestindustries.com/mk1pamomobr.html
But it would still require pressing in the actual mount. And I'm pretty sure it's not for a diesel...
...because a diesel one looks like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VW-Diesel-Injection-Pump-bracket-jetta-rabbit-77-84-yr-/360251431174?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item53e0a89906
Wondering how bad an idea it is to re-use a "good" mount off of ebay?...

I'm not saying it won't happen, but it's extremely unlikely that you'll find a vendor selling new brackets with new bushings for an MK1. And it's such a chore to R&R the bracket that I wouldn't waste my time with a used bushing once I had that bracket on my workbench - you may as well make the extra effort to change out the bushing if you've already gone as far as removing the bracket.
As I understand, the difficulty is finding the correct diesel bushing vs. the more common gas bushing that's often sold as a universal replacement. As far as Techtonics HD bushings, they're very nice but i can't seem to adjust the vibration out at idle. Everything's just fine if I bring the idle up, maybe 50 rpm above spec but I like to keep as many variables within spec as I can.

Autohaus AZ always has them in stock and inexpensive. Find a shop with a hydraulic press and offer $20 cash to the mechanic to press them in.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that right side mount is not the correct diesel engine mount.

I bought a used bracket when I had to do mine, just in case; I didn't want the car out of commission..
With a press, it's not that big a deal, but it's definitely harder than doing a gasser mount. The main issue is the size of the bracket, because it supports the front of the IP. After fumbling with it for a while, I ended up pressed the housing over the mount.
Gotta do another on the recently acquired truck... may as well do the glow plugs, timing belt/tensioner and reseal that side of the block, while I'm there.

The link for the one that BFI sells is just the bracket and the mount will still need to be pressed in.
As was mentioned before, talk to your local VW shop and ask them what they would charge to press it in. I would also recommend buying the mount itself from them. This way they get to make money on the part and pressing it in. It is a good way to show that you appreciate local business.
